Like I said, I don't think he's totally innocent (the aero challenges are him, compounded by stroll getting their tunnel built so late), but I think if Honda can't make enough engine parts to guarantee the car will run and also the car can't run without hurting the drivers anyway, he can say it

Their engines are giving drivers nerve damage, I think they can take it on the chin

Don't get me wrong, I don't think Newey is blameless here, and he doesn't seem to be trying to be - he's been pretty forthright and frank. But it's kind of undeniable that Honda said they could make an engine and they can't.

My guess is, from what I've read, that Honda made a lot of promises that only became apparent a few months ago - they made the deal half a year before he was made TP, and the announcement only sourced Stroll and Whitmarsh, so I wouldn't be surprised if he was somewhat limited in role at that time

It sounds like super late last year they were starting to get worried, forced a meeting with Honda, and that was where Honda revealed that they were both behind schedule and under-staffed because they had to onboard an entire new F1 division rather than move the old people back

I don't necessarily read it that way (he's been open about some challenges due to their accelerated schedule and his advanced aero plans) but the vibrations are totally Honda, who also can't give them enough batteries to drive this weekend without being worried.
