I am usually pretty unmoved by the president's failures of decorum, because I find it creepy that people are generally unmoved by fucked up presidential shit if it's discussed in a tasteful manner and everyone adheres to fancy, historic norms, but that "Quiet, Piggy" shit was something.
Epistemic violence against sexual abuse accusersβsmearing them as deluded, crazy, or incompetentβis something rapists know works, and they conspire to do it.

beware of people who want to "protect" the children but are vehemently opposed to empowering children, giving them information so they can have agency, teaching them about consent, and actually listening to them
I hear what sheβs saying, but her comments do obscure the way online hate is connected to systems of misogyny, racism, anti-Blackness, transphobia, fatphobia, homophobia, and other forms of oppressive violence. Logging off/tuning out can be individually healthy but it isnβt a collective answer.

Just reading @aliadastagir.bsky.social and this grabbed me:
βMany men suggest women and especially feminist women are humourless, that we donβt make good comedians. But they donβt understand how much laughing we have to do just to survive.β
In this weekβs PEN Ten interview, @aliadastagir.bsky.social discusses her new book, To Those Who Have Confused You To Be A Person (@crownpublishing.bsky.social, 2025), which documents the stories of 14 women β herself included β who have faced online abuse. Read more: pen.org/alia-dastagi...

Survivors: we fight and win together.
You are never forgotten. βββ
Lindsey Boylan has been tirelessly driving this message home since Cuomo first announced, all while knowing first-hand how he and his loyalists smear women who tell the truth. And sheβs never backed down, even when pundits were portraying him as inevitable.
Please, NYC - donβt screw this up.
I encourage everyone to read @lindseyboylan.bsky.socialβs story (chapter 9) especially New Yorkers: www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/737402...
When I interviewed @lindseyboylan.bsky.social for my book on online abuse, she told me women were among her most vicious attackers. The @nytimes.com reported the activists smearing Lindsey and Andrew Cuomoβs other accusers were quietly led by Madeline Cuomo, his sister.
Tonight Iβm thinking of @lindseyboylan.bsky.social, the first woman to publicly accuse Andrew Cuomo of sexual harassment. Lindsey was abused in her workplace, and she was further abused online after speaking out. She told me she βequated leading as a woman with a willingness to handle pain.β
I ran a series of four interviews with women whose books are tackling gender, violence, and authoritarianism. This one with
@aliadastagir.bsky.social was about online harassment and how it threatens journalism and democracy. spitfirenews.com/p/online-har...
I remember having this conversation over and over again during Depp v. Heard!
Journalists would ask me what made that case so unusual. My response was always nothing! It was an extremely typical and straightforward case of IPV.
It felt unusual because the media hardly ever depicts IPV accurately.
Thank you for writing!
βOnline abuse doesn't stay online. It follows users into every classroom, therapy session, and nightmare. β¦ I survived. But what about the kids who did not survive?β @leahjuliett.bsky.social mashable.com/article/meta...
Outrageously deserved. Sarah Wildmanβs @nytimes.com piece asks crucial questions about the forms of care families of sick and terminally ill children deserve, exploring how we balance the human desire for truth with the human need for hope. What an honor to read her. www.nytimes.com/2024/11/25/o...
Itβs vital to understand that this kind of abusive online speech has real, physical effects on the mind and body. It is violence. And it makes people affected more vulnerable to other forms of violence. I talked to @aliadastagir.bsky.social about her book on this spitfirenews.com/p/online-har...

This is SO IMPORTANT.
As society, we havenβt grappled with the significance of the fact that women, POC and LGBTQ people face so much more harassment and abuse online than straight white men do. And itβs dramatically impacting society and democracy.
We're excited to have Alia Dastagir speaking on our keynote panel next week! Check out this article to hear from her about her work, and register to join us via Zoom on April 24 for the keynote panel and audience Q&A.

Before #MeToo there was #Gamergate and before that, #EverydaySexism If you followed these movements, you'll be familiar with the points made in this article. The internet is male-dominated. It's never been safe for women. Online harassment leads to a culture of silence. Anti-speech tool is accurate.
Online harassment is an anti-speech tool that has been a longtime weapon for Trump and his allies. I talked to @aliadastagir.bsky.social about her book and the consequences of online abuse for women, journalism, and democracy itself. spitfirenews.com/p/online-har...
I'm always nervous to invite keynote speakers, because I'm so in awe of them!
