If you get sicker, either you get NOTHING, or you beg the USA government for disability “benefits” (you will almost certainly be denied more than once, even if you obviously qualify), and if you get approved you must live within poverty restrictions but you might get insurance and paid caretakers.
There will be no one to help you when you have to pick between taking a shower or making a meal. There will be no one to get your groceries for you because you can’t go to the store (delivery is now common in urban areas thankfully). There are no built in structures to help you.
I had one able bodied friend who made attempts to spend time with me. I was literally, physically left behind by pretty much everyone at every turn. Maybe I didn’t do a good job telling people what I needed. Maybe they didn’t understand. Maybe everyone decided I was too disabled to be included.
When I attempted to go back to college, I couldn’t get accessible housing or get granted off campus housing. The doctor I had signing papers for accessibility accommodations thought I was a drug addict and had been to rehab.
Now, my comment about NO ONE will be there for you if you get sicker? That is a statistical likelihood. I was extremely fortunate. My parents were there for me tho my father himself was quite sick. My partner stayed with me then (and now!) and isn’t abusive (disabled ppl have high rates of DV/abuse)
