On shame discourse again: shame didn’t go anywhere. The balkanization attendant to more powerful self-sorting mechanisms made shame hyper local, which, in turn, expanded the horizon of shamelessness outside those environs. So before we “bring back shame” those mechanisms must be thwarted/diminished

I get the instinct behind “bring back shame,” but it strikes me as similar to saying “bring back penicillin” after an antibiotic resistant bacteria has ravaged the population. I don’t think “shaming” went anywhere, I think there’s been a socio-cognitive adaptation.

One of the amazing things about conservatives and reactionaries is the ability for them to un ironically appreciate art that absolutely hates them.

She drained you of your innocence and you poisoned her with it, by RORCAL from the album Muladona

“My mother’s love for me had been so strong, so consuming, she killed each and every living person in the village…as I turned to her corpse I kissed her sweet smelling hair and said ‘thank you’”

Rorcal whips. #metal #metalsky #doommetal #blackmetal

The anti-Bluesky discourse seems really overheated and dumb. It's a website, FFS. There's plenty of interesting discussion on it and a lot of smart people on it as well. It hasn't supplanted Twitter, true, but the idea that this represents some sort of major disqualifying failure is farcical.

But w/ God as my witness, I’d spend a day w/ someone who has it in their bookshelf before I spend a minute with someone still performing “I Hate David Foster Wallace More than You Do” in the year of our lord 2026.

The Mythology Of Conscious AI | NOEMA Why consciousness is more likely a property of life than of computation and why creating conscious, or even conscious-seeming AI, is a bad idea.

The new piece by Anil Seth in Noema (www.noemamag.com/the-mytholog...) is like a bingo card of currently popular anti-computationalist tropes, but above all it exemplifies the conflation of consciousness and personhood in debates about AI and potential human-likeness.

fascists or antivaxxers because we’ve allowed the decadence of post-colonial studies. That’s absurd.

What we have is history of extremely annoying argumentative/rhetorical maneuvers that both well-meaning and ill-meaning interlocutors have access to.

Causal, no. Substantive…probably no, but not as clear. Both inflected with varying degrees of residual Nietzscheanism (disavowed or not), fairly difficult to deny.

However, pointing out that a tradition does “genealogy for thee, but not for me” doesn’t make a compelling case that we have more…

I even think it might be consonant with your work in that I see a symmetry between illusionism’s inversion of conventional understanding of qualia (e.g., there is no phenomenological ‘color’)

Like I said, perhaps not satisfying, but it’s inspiring me and bringing me joy to consider

I think it provides a clear beacon toward increased human self understanding that both jettisons the need for an injunction against “big other” demanded by the French Nietzscheans and allows us to draw from millennia religious tradition as conceptual resource rather than atheistic disavowal…

I’m inspired by the famous inversion of God as our alienated species being. I think this concept is actually more powerful than most give him credit for (most focus on it as a bridge to Marx). Even if overcoming alienation requires a material chance in social relations LF didn’t himself posit…

The below presents as good a reason as any that everyone should read Feuerbach, who outmoded Schmitt’s equivocations in “Political Theology”before he was born.

And lest it comes across there is some endorsement of “view point diversity” as deployed by whining righties here - I’m arguing to just be honest that some viewpoints SHOULD be excluded from the academy without appealing to the notion of the academy actually being a perfect sorting instrument.

I have no doubt the below is as advertised…

But the argument that “Sure, we systematically excluded/discouraged women and POCs from the academy for forever until we were forced not to, but otherwise we’ve had a nice little meritocracy going on” isn’t very convincing.
