By acknowledging the palimpsestic nature of stories, where narratives intersect and build upon one another, research as witnessing reveals multifaceted, partial, and resilient ways of interpreting war, memory, loss, and the meanings of being alive.
Through wer, individuals and communities convey complex emotions, experiences, and ideas, and create new meanings and interpretations of their reality.
Research as witnessing requires a profound attentiveness to and transformation by the difficult surroundings in which individuals and communities navigate their realities through creative modalities such as song, dance, and storytelling.
Research as witnessing: on wer, living archives and knowing war - Boniface Ojok and I wrote this reflecting on what is knowledge in artistic creation and sites of violence. With thanks to the inspiration of Otoniya Okot Bitek.
