One of the things I love about my job: forming a mutual aid network with other native academic aunties. #IndigeLab
Ice roads are a lifeline for First Nations. As Canada warms, they’re disappearing.
Indigenous peoples are navigating the slow collapse of winter roads — and an even slower pace of help.

Brilliant new paper by Jill Anderson and colleagues using 9 years of transplant experiments and integral projection models to predict the capacity of populations for adaptation and persistence under new climates in Boechera stricta. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
“We found there’s this perfect one-to-one relationship. If a city increased its road capacity by 10% then driving in that city went up by 10%.” Still one of the best articles on why building bigger roads leads to more driving. Understanding #InducedDemand Via @wired.com
Audubon's work on conservation was also fraught. Audubon’s research benefited from information & specimens collected by enslaved Black men/Indigenous people. Instead of recognizing their contributions, he referred to them as “hands” traveling along with white men. theconversation.com/american-env...

“The US may have decided to turn protectionist, but the rest of the world does not have to follow the same path. We will identify other partners..to ensure resilience and maintain critical parts of the multilateral system while laying the foundations for a..new and different global system.” (~19:15)
This is ominous.

Ignace Lab PhD student, Miah Godek, has advanced to candidacy! 🎉 I was impressed by the depth and breadth of knowledge during the comprehensive exam. Miah is also co-advised by the awesome @warrencm.bsky.social and studying the impacts of fire on the below-ground community in the Okanagan Valley.
And the final results are in.
Orr and Maloney in a blowout, with Orr on more than half the ballots cast — an impressive result on a crowded ballot, even in a byelection context.
ABC gets around 13% of the vote, slightly ahead of how Vision did in the 2017 byelection when they were in power.
This! Research shows that protests 1) raise awareness, 2) empower people (especially the disadvantaged), and 3) exert pressure on elites.
Anyone saying they don’t work is unfamiliar with the research and the history of movement building.
Yesterday we held the UW-Madison Indigenous Research Forum. I’m proud my postdoc Yowelunh McLester-Davis for organizing the conference, and to former Simcox lab undergrad Mariaya Jackson for winning second place award for a flash talk. My heart is full and ready to rise another day.
#NAISA video with from the 2024 Native American and Indigenous Studies Association in Norway. #NAISA2025 in Oklahoma will see reduced attendance due to international travel risks to the US. Hoping for hybrid capacity, not originally planned. I have one international panel, including Sámi speakers.
Now go take this Land Back course.

Istanbul. Over 2 million people joined the demonstration.
This morning, the Bay of Fundy and I greeted eachother with a smile. A partial solar sunrise eclipse painted bold colours across the horizon, decorated with the silhouette of a ring-billed gull flying over head.
As infuriating and abhorrent as this is, it's standard colonizer violence, which colonizer laws and doctrines will always work to justify.
How do colonizers come to terms with being treated as they've treated others? It must involve historical honesty and restitution.
Welp. It happened. Our NIH training grant was terminated on Friday.
Just highlighting this incredibly derisive language used in our termination notice.

For folks who don’t know, ethnic studies programs like African American/Africana Studies, Asian American Studies, Chicano Studies and the like come directly from civil right era campus activism. Attempts to disempower such programs should be framed as attacks on civil rights same as much else rn.
Sámi need better legal protections to save their homelands.
