And to all the authors. So excited to see this out!!!
Thrilled to share this study tracking Staph aureus carriage and transmission across the NICU using genomics! Work done w @pjplanet.bsky.social & @ahmedmicrobes.bsky.social and made possible by @centermicrobialmed.bsky.social.
Study co-led by the amazing @qianxuan.bsky.social & Lakshmi Srinivasan!
Over 3 years we performed WGS-based surveillance of S. aureus in the NICU at @childrensphila.bsky.social, sequencing both surveillance and bloodstream infection isolates, to understand how colonization, transmission, and persistence are associated with invasive infection in high-risk neonates.
"I fielded mail from all manner of people...what they often evinced was better than interest, better even than bibliophilia; it was the rare & precious capacity to be interested in what they didnβt already know interested them. It was a willingness to be changed." www.newyorker.com/books/page-t...
Cool story! Congratulations on this preprint!
Taken together: The neonatal liver undergoes a developmentally hard-wired Treg wave facilitated by cDC1s needed to restrain activation and promote tolerance in conventional T cells that respond to both microbes and self in early life. (10/10)

My sister-in-law's dad died last week, in hospice in the VA hospital in Minneapolis. I just learned Alex Pretti was part of his care team. They shot Alex less than 1/2 mile from my niece's house while doing the same observation work that my niece is doing. These are real people. Step up folks!
Congress is not powerless. Democrats must unify around an actual agenda.
1. Vote no on DHS funding bill.
2. Repeal the multi-year $75 billion funding for ICE.
3. End qualified immunity for ICE agents.
4. Investigate and prosecute every single ICE agent who broke the law.
Happy New Year, all! Reminder that the deadline for abstract selected talks is Jan 7th for @keystonesymposia.bsky.social meeting "Beyond Antibiotics: Emerging Strategies Combating Bacterial Infection." Register today and join us in Breckenridge!! It is going to be an awesome meeting!
It's not too late to get your flu shot. Flu circulates year round but more intensely during flu season. For N. hemisphere:
Onset: OctoberβNovember
Peak: DecemberβFebruary (most often January)
Decline: March
Tail end: AprilβMay (occasionally later)
This is why we give shots until the end of February
Friday we lost a brilliant mind, colleague, and friend to her battle with pancreatic cancer. Those who knew her will remember Helene Andrews-Polymenis for her warmth, generosity and leadership. She will be missed by many. RIP
Excited to share research co-led by Gabby & Adam in @jem.org! Grateful to the NIH & @scripps.edu for support.
Congratulations Michela!!!
I am excited to share that our work, in which we have dissected the signals driven by the nucleoside-modified mRNA and LNP components of mRNA vaccines that regulate germinal center (GC) responses, is now published in Cell! www.cell.com/cell/fulltex...

ONLINE COVERB Cell Help Measures Up Against Parasites. How B cells acquire antigens from large pathogens, including single-celled parasites, to support T cellβdriven humoral responses is not well understood. Gao et al. used Ighg2A10 B cells specific for the surface Plasmodium falciparum circumsporozoite protein (PfCSP) to examine the interaction between B cells and Plasmodium berghei sporozoites engineered to express PfCSP. Ighg2A10 B cells could internalize and present cognate and bystander surface antigens, which resulted in both intramolecular and intermolecular CD4 T cell help. This help either suppressed or supported protective B cell responses depending on whether the CD4 T cells recognized cytosolic or surface sporozoite antigens. This monthβs cover is a pseudocolored and digitally altered scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrograph of Plasmodium sporozoites (pale purple) attached to Ighg2A10 B cells (bright pink) at one end.
