I think itโ€™s more that they treat polls as if theyโ€™re gospel/fortunes, regardless of how someone is actually performing (ie heโ€™s been making some terrible decisions for ages but hadnโ€™t been polling badly). So heads can roll if the polls suggest it.

Itโ€™s this weird โ€œoh times upโ€ thing, that no matter how anyone is actually performing, if the polls suggest theyโ€™re doing badly then the knives come out.

Having just received one, I feel like the New Yorkerโ€™s tote bags for subscribers are possibly the one of the best marketing strategies of all time. These things are possibly the STURDIEST feeling totes Iโ€™ve ever come across.

There were 387 women serving prison sentences nationwide in December 2025.
MOJ says addressing the โ€œdisproportionโ€ would see 149 fewer Mฤori women being sentenced to prison each year.
That would potentially cut back the sentenced female prison population by more than a third.

Just to clarify HOW bleak this is,
there were 369 women in prison on remand waiting for trials or sentencing in December.
MOJ says addressing the โ€œunexplained disproportionโ€ would result in 125 fewer Mฤori women ending up in custodial remand each year - that would affect almost a THIRD of them.

It used to not be possible to tell which SC judge of a three judge panel wrote a leave judgment. But then Kรณs J was appointed and now there are occasional signs.

All the fancy pictures of the central Wellington library rebuild donโ€™t show the external walls because they didnโ€™t bother to spend any of the budget on water blasting.

An Uber driver pointed this out to me a few months back and Iโ€™ve been unable to see anything else since.

But butโ€ฆ good guys with guns/drone strikes/missilesโ€ฆ
(Also, Iโ€™ve now got We Didnโ€™t Start the Fire stuck in my head.)

Still havenโ€™t got over Israelโ€™s โ€œpreemptive strikesโ€.

Went to an event where she was speaking and she said โ€œIโ€™ve just got a text that said congrats, youโ€™re neither on the front page of the paper nor mentioned anywhere in the letters to the editorโ€. Itโ€™s just immoral to spend that much money on a building now.

They lost experienced cops because they turned out to be covering up for their mateโ€ฆ and then others turned out to be also misusing work devicesโ€ฆ and then some did actually just move to Australia.

Clearly NZ First have no original thoughts (apart from developing the Dargaville Aerodrome, RIP 2023 NZF election manifesto) but do they even have any original bills left either?

So the report still says there were 35,000 victims of family violence incidents in the 12 months to Oct 2025 and 71,000 victims of sexual assault. www.justice.govt.nz/assets/Docum...
No doubt the coalition are using the stats, but just confirming the NZCVS is not Police data.

27.02.2026 03:50 ๐Ÿ‘ 0 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

To be fair, the NZCVS doesnโ€™t use Police data, MoJ independently surveys a wide bunch of Kiwis about reported and unreported violent crimes - which are defined as โ€œincidents of sexual assault, non-sexual physical
assault, or robberyโ€ - so it shouldnโ€™t matter whether the Police show up or not.

While there are still no Justice Judges appointed to the court as of yet, this is a good start on the great names front.

I think this is it, right. It leaves the risk up to people. And as much as people go on about โ€œchoiceโ€, they donโ€™t like having it without knowing all the info. And people are like well it smells, and they say itโ€™s okay close to shore but not to surf, so how deep is safeโ€ฆ Iโ€™m not risking it.

Quick reminder that The Dawn Raids only targeted brown people at a time when our largest group of overstayers came from England.

Also surfers donโ€™t go that far from the shore. No boogie boarding either?
I want to see Wellington hospital in a week or so when people start coming in with random stuff.

You can take the man out of Labour, but you canโ€™t take the Labour out of the man (not a compliment).
So weโ€™re just all good with ignoring rฤhui now, are we?

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing people local newspaper reporters are rarified elites instead of ink-stained wretches driving their Honda Civic to a crime scene so you know donโ€™t have to rely on Nextdoor and the police press release.

On Move On orders - I've been in some of the meetings with Ministers about city centre safety issues in AK; it has repeatedly been discussed that the people doing the anti-social behaviour and the people who are visibly homeless on our streets are usually NOT the same people.

Yeah, thereโ€™s a couple of street preachers with speaker systems on Cuba St they could move on.

And then folks go โ€œbut those aggressive beggars have homes so Iโ€™m not gonna give to anyone because theyโ€™re ALL liarsโ€ and like, my dude, no-oneโ€™s sleeping on the street for funsies so they can get a days worth of judgmental stares and comments for a few coins in an increasingly cashless society.

So they donโ€™t quote any Asian migrant opinion but quote Reality Check Radio. Right.
I wish Hayden hadnโ€™t left Mediawatch.

One of my most cherished friendships is with a guy who will most likely get โ€œmoved onโ€ by someone under this. He sits outside my office building, bothering no one but collecting what he can, and weโ€™ve become good mates. He recently got housing after 13 months on the street and itโ€™s such a relief.

One of the best lines my grandpa (who never swore) ever uttered, was after the February 2011 earthquake.

โ€œWhatโ€™s all this stuff called, liquifuckion?โ€

It really needs to be renamed.

This was policy under the Labour govt too, the bill just reinstates existing MSD practice - so itโ€™s exactly in line with where the party has been happy to be at for some time.
They would be seen as hypocrites to oppose it, but could have pitched an overhaul of ACC as a campaign promise or something.

I think we need a statement from the Minister for Regulation reminding his colleagues of the purpose of his new ministry and the aims of the Regulatory Standards Act 2025 to promote good law making โ€ฆ ๐Ÿ™„
