Rebecca Solnit Says the Left’s Next Hero Is Already Here

“Everything we can save is worth saving. Everything we can do is worth doing. We’ve already lost a lot, but we don’t have to lose everything. We don’t have to surrender.” 💯

Bald Head
Bald Head YouTube video by Roy Byrd & His Blues Jumpers - Topic

If I understand the 2nd question correctly, do you mean something like the bass walk up on this song, around 0:35?

"Bald Head", recorded by Roy Byrd (later known as Professor Longhair) in 1950, is the earliest example I can find, but not sure it's the first.

This is still one of my favourite videos ever, perfectly explaining the staggering amount of public money that’s going into NOT solving traffic congestion.

On August 12, 2017, Heather Heyer was killed by a neo-Nazi in Charlottesville.

On August 17, 2017, Noam Chomsky told the Washington Examiner that antifa was “a gift to the far right”.

In between those dates he met with Jeffrey Epstein in Tuscon.

My theory for North America is that this is the consequence of the fact that every urban profession shifted to work in the wrong field: road engineers design public spaces (it should be planners), planners meddle with architecture via design reqs/codes. Architects became façadists.

Not all stories around Nobel Prize medals are positive, however, and some of the choices made by laureates were quite controversial.

Norwegian author Knut Hamsun, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1920, reportedly gave his medal to Nazi Germany's Minister of Propaganda Joseph Goebbels during World War II.

Hamsun, who met with Adolf Hitler and Goebbels in 1943, was a Nazi sympathiser who supported the German occupation of Norway. Historical accounts indicate he gave his Nobel medal to Goebbels as a symbolic gesture of support.

Hamsun's reputation was destroyed after the war, although his literary works continue to be studied.

Trump shares some interesting company as the last person to be gifted a Nobel Prize medal they did not earn was Joseph Goebbels.

Increasingly it's clearer to a lot of people what i have been saying for a while: people use "inflation" and "prices" to talk about their own difficulty making ends meet or affording big ticket items once "inflation" became a big media news story. It's not actually about CPI or even increases.

1. Term limits make legislators less experienced and capable. This means fewer & worse laws pass. It also empowers governors (neutral change), bureaucrats (a little bad) and lobbyists (very bad). 2. Term limits reduce legislators’ incentives to listen to or care about voters.

Before (2024) / After (2025) the pedestrianization of Pont d'Iéna, Paris 16. Before that, tourists taking selfies in front of the Eiffel Tower had to go in the middle of the wide lanes of general traffic. Now they are in a pedestrian zone and just have to cross a slow bus lane (20 kph = 12 mph).

Sanford grandfather, born in refugee camp, nabbed by ICE after 70 years in U.S. Paul Bojerski never gained official residency, but he checked in regularly with ICE for years. Then in July, at age 79, he was detained and sent to Alligator Alcatraz.

79-year-old Paul Bojerski was born to Polish parents in a WWII German refugee camp. His family legally emigrated to the U.S. when he was 5.

He’s been taken by ICE in Florida.

🧵 Across the world, democracy isn’t just under pressure, it’s facing epistemic collapse: a breakdown in the shared ability to know what’s true, to reason together and to hold power to account.

A new guest paper by @eliothiggins.bsky.social and @drnataliemartin.bsky.social explores how to fix it.

quote from culture of cities:
Instead of accepting the stale cult of death that the fascists have
erected, as the proper crown for the servility and the brutality that
are the pillars of their states, we must erect a cult of life: life in
action, as the farmer or the mechanic knows it: life in expression,
as the artist knows it: life as the lover f eels it and the parent practices it: life as it is known to men of good will who meditate in the cloister, experiment in the laboratory, or plan intelligently in the factory or the government office.

Not sure how to fix it, but there's some ways to work around it. If you're using Finder in "Icons" view, it may be less disruptive to switch to "Columns" when moving files.

If spring load happens and you want to back out quickly, press Esc key. If you accidentally move a file, undo is Command+Z
