You've seen it on a decent chunk of board games but it ports back fairly well to doing say, 4E style combat. Also would have been so much better to emulate FFXIV than the abomination that we were graced with instead.
Basically
Deck and Map games, where the players and enemies are chits on a grid and enemy actions are defined by cards drawn from a deck, are a good mechanic and more RPGs should use them to do combat instead of relying on standard engines.
I mean you just pick a subclass? There's no figuring out a build involved, it's select your entrée and you're good to go.
