We now urge the governments of Europe to take heed. Conversion practices are harmful. A legislative ban sends a clear message to perpetrators that this abuse cannot continue with impunity. We particularly look to our own government to fulfil their promise of publishing a draft Bill urgently.

Let’s be clear about what that means. It means vulnerable LGBT+ people, especially young people and especially those from religious backgrounds, are still being subjected to efforts to change or suppress who they are. No amount of prayer or exorcism is going to change that. It only leads to trauma.
Back in 2018, the Government promised to ban so-called ‘conversion therapy’. That was eight years ago. Eight years of delay, excuses, consultations, and broken promises. And still today, these abusive, discredited practices are not banned in law.
It’s #LGBTHistoryMonth – yet the UK still hasn’t consigned the horrors of ‘conversion therapy’ to the history books. With no ban in place, the law is still not on the side of its victims. For many, it remains nothing more than torture disguised as religious compassion.

As we and others have previously reported, and as the Observer reported on Sunday, hundreds of millions of US dollars are currently being pumped into the UK from the Trump-aligned anti-rights movement, who are specifically aiming to reverse decades of progress.
This is the latest in a long line of recent attacks on LGBT rights and from conservative Christian nationalists. It follows on from recent moves by Reform UK councillors in Northamptonshire to ban Pride flags on council buildings.

The idea that acknowledging the existence of gay people will somehow 'turn' children gay is not only ignorant – it’s laughable. If that were true, every gay person would have ended up straight. Representation doesn’t convert anyone. It just makes it safer for people to be who they already are.
Growing up gay means being surrounded by heteronormative ideas from every direction. We’re taught from the earliest age that boys marry girls, that love looks a certain way, that families follow a single pattern. And yet, despite all of that, we still come out gay.
