One reason I take so many sea cucumber photos is they don't run away from me, but there's something enticing about a creature that resembles an unfortunate sausage and feeds with tentacles that look like the diagram of a complex nervous system. πŸ¦‘ #oceans #Scuba #diving #pacificnorthwest #echinoderm

Scientist's way of saying 'I ❀️ you'

"I found this paper/preprint that made me think of your project."
"I checked the mice/cells/plates already."
"I just sent you the edits you requested."
"I have a slide/diagram that will work for that."

When Science Funding Becomes a Lottery or, how Europe’s funding schemes turned evaluation into ritual

'Yesterday, I learned that one of my students, who applied for a Marie Curie Fellowship, did not get it. My first reaction was to ask what could be done to improve the application in the future. Then I saw the score: above 93 points!.'

Public-speaking tips from the experts: what scientists can learn from comics, musicians and actors Taking to the stage to present your science is a key part of research, but talks often fall flat, says John Tregoning. Can scientists learn from performers to better engage an audience?

Great article on public speaking for scientists!

We face two potential missteps in ecophysiology: 1) measuring animals under socially unrealistic conditions & 2) extrapolating results to nature, where social dynamics alter trait expression, plasticity, & evolutionary outcomes. Our new commentary in @jexpbiol.bsky.social : doi.org/10.1242/jeb....

None of this would have been possible without the belief and support from @wilsontoxlab.bsky.social, who guided us throughout this great project (and for my entire PhD). It was this culture of teamwork and collaboration that I valued most and gave me some of the best experiences I had in the lab.

But why do this at all? πŸͺ± Because Capitella teleta isn't just an amazingly cute animal: it’s an ecotoxicological model organism!

We wanted to give researchers one more tool in their arsenal: a screening assay to test how sensitive these worms are to toxicants.

13.12.2025 13:42 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Max ran with this assay, further optimized it for higher throughput and took things to the next level. He exposed these young worms to fluoxetine (serotonin reuptake inhibitor), phenobarbital (GABA agonist) & apomorphine (dopamine agonist) to determine whether their behaviour changed.

The start of this assay came during a tough stretch of my PhD, but diving into it with fresh energy and the brilliant behavioural insights of Andrew Thompson (just starting as a postdoc in the @wilsontoxlab.bsky.social) felt like pure kismet, arriving at the perfect moment.

πŸͺ±I am thrilled to share our work featuring my favourite worm, an amazing undergrad (now an MSc student 🀩) and the best lab ever!

I also got to reminisce over my first publication ever in JEB! Horseshoe crabs! The feeling of being an undergrad and getting to go on an island (Seahorse Key, FL) every weekend for 4 months and then doing long multiple-stressor experiments. Made me fall in love with science.❀️
