Jo Grady’s UCU election win challenged over ‘unfair advantage’
Candidates who stood in 2024 poll seek rerun of campaign after claiming incumbent broke rules by using union resources
The @timeshighered.bsky.social has reported that @ewanmg.bsky.social and I have applied to the Certification Officer regarding concerns over the 2024 UCU general secretary election. UCU has characterised this as “smearing”, via a spokesperson.

Have deactivated my Twitter account finally. Trying to make some connections lost since the change of owners. Hoping to start new networks especially around organising around abolition, migrants and protest.

Jo Grady calling Queen Mary management "vindictive" for making deductions from UCU members taking action short of a strike: Jo Grady, UCU's general secretary, said Queen Mary's senior management had "launched a vindictive attack" on its members, "punishing them for taking part in lawful industrial action" and "cementing its reputation as the worst university employer in the UK" She said: "It is wrong to do this at any time and all the more deplorable as staff struggle to make ends meet in a cost of living crisis."
Screen shot of the article from The Guardian about Queen Mary ASOS deductions in which Jo Grady is quoted
🚨 Third consecutive vote for industrial action 🚨
✅ strike action: 76%
✅ action short of a strike (ASOS): 80%
✅ turnout: 77%
ASOS begins today with @ucu.org.uk threatening staff: "We'll deduct your wages."
Double standards and vindictive attacks undermine us all.

And that's a wrap on UCU Congress 2025 and also my time as the Migrant rep on NEC 🥲
I'm also stepping down from being part of the Migrant Member Standing Committee.
It's been an honour to have help set up MMSC. I wish I could have done more. And as for NEC never again... 😅

On Friday, the last UCU NEC meeting is to be held before Congress.

I hoped #UCU would redouble efforts to resolve the @uniteucu.bsky.social staff dispute
Instead our own union-as-employer has issued management instructions NOT to use tactics #UCU members have routinely been advised to use *by #UCU*

"No-one has been arrested in a Quaker meeting house in living memory".
Some said we were overstating our case, in our report launched last week, that we've now reached a state of repression in England and Wales.
THIS is repression

Your job today is to come up with a plan for what you will personally do if ICE shows up at your workplace, school, or place of worship, and tries to disappear someone. Talk about it with friends and coworkers. Write down phone numbers you’ll need. Role-play scenarios. Practice what you will say.

Unite UCU
Unite branch (LE127) for employees of the University and College Union
We deeply regret our strike action which begins today in our Campaign for A Safe and Professional Workplace. With our dispute now a year old we remain resolute that the toxic bullying culture, racism and victimisation that our members and officers are experiencing must end.

Solidarity @uniteucu.bsky.social who are starting 20+ strikes given ongoing dispute with employer (UCU). Our union (UCU) is in an ongoing dispute with their own staff.
Embarrassing to say the least. Awful to see same tone & messaging VCs use vs us when we strike used to undermine striking UCU staff

Just the sheer, obscene spectacle of a Government minister on £160K+ plus expenses and all the freebies, coming for the sub £10K per year that my son gets in PIP - being autistic & learning disabled in a deeply unequal, discriminatory & hostile society is not a “lifestyle choice”

Totally agree with this. Flying a person to a third country that they may never have been to, directly into a prison where they are going to be forced to do hard labor, is not a deportation; it's something else entirely.

Barely on this site, hardly check it. If you'd like to connect around organising for migrant rights, community work, alternatives to policing email me. I am still on Twitter more regularly than here
One reason not on here is toxic union behaviour which has moved on this platform 🙃

I explore how activist use social media & protest in public spaces to reclaim their bodies in both material & virtual spaces.
This has been a labour of love & a deeply personal issue for me.
Thank you to Ana, Kate & Kundai, who've been wonderful editors for the special issue!

Latin American feminists have theorised the intersection betweenwomen’s bodies and the territories they inhabit via cuerpo-territorio.Adding a new layer of complexity, this article turns to the wayInstagram has become another space where women navigate thisrelationship. I use the August 2019 feminist protests against thegovernment and police in Mexico accompanied by the hashtags#NoMeCuidanMeViolan (they don’t take care of me, they rape me),#NoNosCuidanNosViolan (they don’t take care of us, they rape us),#MeCuidanMisAmigasNoLaPolicia (my friends take care of me notthe police) and #ExigirJusticiaNoEsProvocacion (demanding justiceis not a provocation) to show how women reclaim their bodies inboth material and virtual spaces. Based on Donna Haraway’s andChela Sandoval’s work I use the term cyborg movidas to examinehow Mexican feminist activists engaged in protest as a technologyof resistance. Cyborg movidas are the collective embodiment of polit-ical manoeuvres influenced by emotions such as rage and love, which defy rigid boundaries of human–non-human, digital–physical, body–space and individual–collective relations. Such movidas allowus to imagine activism as a collective possibility of socio-politicalchange
Exciting to share my new OA article in Third World Quarterly !
