Making disability an aggravated offence is a positive step. However, convictions rates at 2% and difficulty in proving 'hostility' mean that justice is still out of reach for many victims.

An increase in MIG is an important small step in the right direction.
But considering the dire poverty that thousands of disabled social care users live in, the government must take much bolder action to achieve truly meaningful change.

£400 cash boost for disabled adults to tackle cost of living
150,000 disabled adults to keep £400 more cash each year to help with cost of living, and £700 million to support tens of thousands of home adaptations.
We welcome this news, as it will leave more money for Disabled people to pay for essentials like food.
However, it is wrong to take away people's disability benefits to pay for their care. Care charging is a tax on disability and must be scrapped entirely. #ScrapCareCharging

Disabled people already face significant barriers to safe travel in London. Removing ticket offices would make it even worse. Transport for London must keep the Elizabeth Line's ticket offices.

Delays to the Access to Work scheme have increased significantly, leaving some disabled people without support.
If the government are serious about supporting Deaf and Disabled people into work, they need to properly fund the Access to Work scheme.

“Recording and investigating non-hate crime incidents is a vital evidence base for proving patterns of abuse and securing a conviction. At a time when disabled people’s confidence in police handling of reports is low, we mustn’t take away vital evidence, but instead should strengthen the law”.

Our Senior Policy Officer, Louise Holden, said: “Only 1 in 10 hate crimes against disabled people are thought to be reported … and there are low rates of investigation and conviction, meaning disabled victims rarely see justice."
