Recensie: The House Saphir van Marissa Meyer In 2017 brak Marissa Meyer bij het Nederlandse publiek door met haar “The Lunar Chronicles” serie, waarin bekende sprookjes een science fiction twist krijgen. De boeken die daarna werden uitgegeven waren beduidend minder succesvol en zijn ook niet allemaal meer vertaald. Toch is deze auteur sprookjes blijven hervertellen, met Blauwbaard als nieuwste toevoeging aan haar bibliografie. Hoewel eerdergenoemde “The Lunar Chronicles” tot een van mijn favoriete series behoort, konden andere boeken in het oeuvre van deze auteur mij minder bekoren.

Marissa Meyer is voornamelijk bekend van haar hervertellingen van sprookjes. Met The House Saphir voegt ze een nieuwe hervertelling aan haar bibliografie toe, namelijk die van het sprookje van Blauwbaard. Je leest er alles over in mijn recensie.

Recensie: The Lion Women of Tehran van Marjan Kamali De Iraans-Amerikaanse auteur Marjan Kamali is een auteur wiens boeken De boekwinkel van Teheran en Sneeuwvlokken in Teheran ik eerder al met plezier las. Toen niet heel lang geleden mijn oog op haar nieuwste boek The Lion Women of Tehran viel, was mijn interesse dan ook direct gewekt. Toch pakte ik het niet op, want ik wachtte op een Nederlandse vertaling.

Vandaag op Internationale Vrouwendag heb ik een recensie voor je van het nieuwste boek van Marjan Kamali, The Lion Women of Tehran. Naast het strijden voor gelijke rechten van vrouwen werpt deze roman ook een licht op de politieke situatie in het land waar alle ogen momenteel weer op gericht zijn.

Book Review: The Lion Women of Tehran by Marjan Kamali Iranian-American author Marjan Kamali is an author whose books I read and thoroughly enjoyed. However, it took me a while to pick up her newest release, The Lion Women of Tehran. This is not due to the book itself, but I was awaiting a Dutch publication as I read her other books in Dutch. This hasn’t happened thus far, so I decided to just pick up the English audiobook. I finished it just last week and I’m still super behind on my other reviews, but since it’s International Women's Day today, I figured it’s very fitting to publish my review for this book today.

On this iNternational Women's Day, I have a review up for a book about fighting for women's rights. Marjan Kamali addresses this in The Lion Women of Tehran, alongside the political situation in this country. Find more on my blog.

Book Review: A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher T. Kingfisher is an author I’ve seen floating around in the blogosphere a lot. However, I always doubted whether these books were for me, as I’m not much of a horror reader. And let’s be honest, most books by this author fall into the horror category. However, in spring 2025, A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking was published in Dutch and immediately caught my attention. It’s not horror, but still fantasy. Was this an introduction to a new-to-me author gone well? About the book My review Before reading Quite frankly, I totally didn’t register that this was a middle-grade fantasy.

A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking is my first introduction to T. Kingfisher, an author who is beloved by many fellow book bloggers. Am I able to share this enthusiasm or was this book simply not for me?

Recensie: Geest komt op van Isabella Hammad Op 7 oktober 2023 schokten Israël en Palestina de hele wereld met hun daden en de slachtpartij die daarop volgde. Het Israëlisch-Palestijnse conflict speelt al sinds de jaren ’60 van de twintigste eeuw, maar met deze aanvallen over en weer bereikt het een nieuw kookpunt. Om dit conflict hopelijk beter te kunnen begrijpen – want volledig begrijpen lukt nooit – is erover lezen en goede manier.

Geest komt op van Isabella Hammad speelt zich af in Palestina en ik hoopte dat het mij meer inzicht zou geven in het conflict dat daar al decennia speelt. Is deze roman daarin geslaagd?

Top Ten Tuesday: Books To Diversify Your Reading #3 | The YA Edition Hi and welcome back to another Top Ten Tuesday post! This week is a genre freebie and I’ve been saying that I wanted to continue my lists of books to diversify your reading. So, why not combine these two into one topic? I therefore present to you: Books To Diversify Your Reading, The Young Adult Edition! I believe YA is the most diverse genre I’ve ever encountered and even though I’ve outgrown the main characters’ age range, I still applaud those books for digging deep and discuss the more difficult themes adult novels often don’t dare touching upon.

Recensie: The first to fall van Kristina Moninger Het is velen van jullie inmiddels vast wel bekend dat ik lekker ga op romance boeken en al helemaal als er een emotioneel randje aan lijkt te zitten. The first to fall van de Duitse auteur Kristina Moninger lijkt dan ook precies zo'n boek wat mij tevreden zal stellen. Het belandde in de nazomer van 2025 op mijn TBR, maar desondanks (en geheel tegen mijn verwachting in) pakte ik het niet op.

The first to fall is het eerste boek in de Red Summer serie van Kristina Moninger. In tegenstelling tot veel andere romances bevat dit boek mysterie. Wist mij dit te overtuigen? Je leest het in mijn recensie.

Maandelijkse TBR | maart 2026 Soms is het goed om eens iets nieuws uit te proberen op je blog. Al tijden worstel ik met wat voor soort artikelen ik nou zal plaatsen, nu zijn het toch voornamelijk recensies. Op Engelse blogs doen andere artikelen zoals vaste wekelijkse lijstjes en discussies het altijd goed, maar op de een of andere manier slaan die in het Nederlands niet (mer) zo aan.

Monthly TBR | March 2026 It has been a long, long while since I last posted and curated a monthly TBR. The final time was October 2025, it went all downhill afterwards. Not too strange considering this is the month my reading slump hit me hard and I haven’t fully recovered from it ever since. But it’s March, nearly spring, so time to give these monthly TBRs another go. I again use my “up next” queue on The Storygraph, which I finally filled again as well. Which books do I hope to read in March?

It feels like I'm getting my reading and blogging mojo back, so it was time to do another Monthly TBR post since I last did one of these in October 2025. What do I hope to read this coming month?

Onder de loep | februari 2026 Blijkbaar is het opeens alweer maart en dat had ik niet in de gaten. Hoezo gaat dit jaar nu al zo snel? De tijd glipt zomaar tussen je vingers door. Het is daarom ook niet verwonderlijk dat het niet is gelukt om februari op de eerste van de maand al onder de loep te nemen, daar ging de maand gewoon veel te snel voor.

Eén keer met je ogen knipperen en februari is ook alweer voorbij. Kan het nog sneller allemaal? Mijn leesmaand was er eentje voor in de boeken. Of toch niet? Je leest er alles over in mijn maandoverzicht van februari 2026.

Monthly Wrap Up | February 2026 Apparently it’s March already and I just didn’t realize it. February has come and gone in the blink of an eye, so this monthly wrap up is late. Or at least, later than I’m used to post these. However, this past month was such a blur. I was tired, had low energy, was busy, it was winter, I fell asleep on the sofa… So, the usual. Reading and blogging took the back burner, which means that I’m still behind on reviews. I’m still struggling with them though, haven’t found the right format and they seem to come easier to me in Dutch.

It's March already, why is time going so fast? February was a reading month for the books, or wasn't it? You'll find out all about it in my monthly wrap up.

Recensie: Als bittere sinaasappels van Milena Palminteri De afgelopen periode heb ik mij vooral gefocust op het lezen van romance, romantasy en alles dat daar een beetje onder valt. Toch maak ik regelmatig een uitstapje naar andere genres, zoals literatuur. Een van deze recente uitstapjes was Als bittere sinaasappels van de Italiaanse auteur Milena Palminteri, dat zich afspeelt op Sicilië tussen de jaren ’20 en ’60 van de vorige eeuw.

Als bittere sinaasappels van Milena Palminteri is een succes in Italië, maar een minder grote hit in Nederland. Is dit terecht? Je leest het in mijn recensie.

Book Review: The House Saphir by Marissa Meyer I know I’m super late, but I missed out on a lot of young adult books when they were actually published. I didn’t know this genre existed back in – let’s say – 2012. This was the time when so many of my beloved series and books got published, and Marissa Meyer’s "The Lunar Chronicles" were amongst them. Now, nearly fifteen years later, it’s time for the newest book by the queen of fairytale retellings, The House Saphir. Book Review: Enter Ghost by Isabella Hammad A book I have been meaning to read for a while now is Enter Ghost by Isabella Hammad. It has been circling around on various TBR posts since summer 2025, especially because of its setting and it’s themes. This novel is set in Palestine and promised to shed a light on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that has been going on for decades, but became even worse since October 7, 2023. Was this book able to provide me on some more insight in this conflict at all? About the book An unforgettable Palestinian story of artistry under occupation, from the winner of the Betty Trask Award.

Enter Ghost by Isabella Hammad piqued my interest as it’s set in Palestine and I was hoping that I would learn some more about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that has been lingering for decades. Did this book meet my expectations?

Top Ten Tuesday: Cosy Books Hi and welcome back to another Top Ten Tuesday post! This week’s topic is suggested by another Laurie over at Bay State Reader’s Advisory and is Books for Armchair Travelers. Now, I’m notorious (or famous) for going rogue, so that’s exactly what I am doing this week. Or, not entirely, but I still won’t stick to the original topic. I will just list ten books classified as cosy instead, no matter whether I agree on this classification or not. Furthermore, I haven’t read all of these. And by now, I realize this has been an old topic on which I went rogue… Are you even surprised?

Recensie: Pictures of you van Emma Grey Het lezen wil dit jaar tot noch toe niet zo vlotten. Ik merk dat ik moeite heb met het kiezen van een boek en dat ik ook weinig zin heb om daadwerkelijk te lezen. Toch zocht ik gestaag verder en na een aantal fantasy titels vond ik het wel weer eens tijd voor een ander genre. Meestal haalt romance of literatuur light mij uit zo’n dipje en laat Pictures of you van Emma Grey nou net tot dat laatste genre behoren.

Pictures of you van Emma Grey is in de markt gezet als een romance van tweede kansen. Heeft dit mij, als een echte romance lezer, weten te overtuigen? Je leest het in mijn recensie.

Let’s Talk: Romance boeken Vandaag is het Valentijnsdag, de dag die in het teken staat van liefde en romantiek. En laat romance nou net het meest populaire boekengenre van de afgelopen jaren zijn. Ook bij mij is dit genre niet onopgemerkt gebleven, want zowel in 2024 als 2025 is romance mijn meest gelezen genre. Er zijn een aantal belangrijke elementen die kenmerkend zijn voor romance en vandaag licht ik er wat uit en geef ik hier mijn ongezouten mening over.

Let’s Talk Bookish: Romance Novels Hi and welcome to – once again – a kind of late Let’s Talk Bookish post! I swear I have to better prepare these, but you know, life. Anyway, this week’s topic is romance novels and I’m 100% sure we did the same topic last year, with similar prompts even, so I’m giving it my own spin this year. Instead of answering the prompts, I will highlight some features of romance novels and elaborate on whether I like them or not. Valentine’s Day is coming up and romance is more popular than ever, so for this week’s Let’s Talk Bookish we’re discussing romance novels. But I tweaked the original topic a bit and discuss some features of the genre and my own two cents on them.

10 Alternatieven voor Harry Potter In 2020 kwam aan het licht dat J.K. Rowling een ware transfoob is. Haar transfobe uitspraken hebben ervoor gezorgd dat ze massaal gecanceld werd en dat mensen massaal alternatieven voor Harry Potter aanbevolen. Ik ben opgegroeid met de wereld van deze tovenaarsleerling, het was mijn eerste kennismaking met fantasy en was één van de constanten van mijn tienerjaren. Ik las het eerste boek in 2001, toen ik net tien jaar was en het laatste boek ging uit in 2011, vlak voor ik twintig werd.

Word jij ook zo moe van het feit dat Harry Potter nog steeds door je strot wordt geduwd als aanbeveling terwijl de uitspraken van Rowling ronduit problematisch zijn? Ja, het heeft een hele generatie lezers gevormd, maar er zijn nog veel meer boeken te ontdekken. Hier zijn er 10 voor je.

Recensie: Phantasma van Kaylie Smith In 2024 kon je in de internationale boekenwereld haast niet om Phantasma van Kaylie Smith heen. Deze duistere romantische fantasy vol magie heeft vele lezersharten weten te veroveren. Zoals altijd ben ik wat voorzichtig met hypes, zo ook met deze. In het voorjaar van 2025 waagde ik toch de sprong en pakte ik het boek op. Dit bleek geen goede zet, want het ging voortijdig aan de kant.

Phantasma van Kaylie Smith is een romantasy waar je de afgelopen jaren niet omheen kon. De eerste keer pakte het mij niet, maar het kreeg een herkansing. Was dit een slimme zet?

Book review: Pictures of You by Emma Grey My reading hasn't been going so well thus far. I struggle to pick up a book and afte some fantasy, I decided to turn things around a bit. I was seeking a book that had me on the edge of my seat, hooked from start to finish. Was Pictures of You by Emma Grey the book I was looking for? About the book My review Before reading I really can’t remember how this book came on my radar, but I must have seen it somewhere, otherwise I wouldn’t have known of its existence.

After some romantasy, I needed a palate cleanser and genre change. I stumbled upon Emma Grey's Pictures of You. Although I enjoyed my time spent with this book, this was not the second chance romance I was hoping to find. More in my review.

Onder de loep | januari 2026 Januari is alweer even voorbij en in tegenstelling tot andere jaren voelde het alsof deze maand voorbij is gevlogen. We begonnen 2026 met een week in een witte, koude wereld. Goed excuus om lekker weg te duiken in een boek zou je denken, alleen liep dat even anders. Het lezen wil bij mij niet zo vlotten en ik kan er niet precies de vinger op leggen waarom dan niet.
