My first year here I had a recurring intrusive thought: I felt like a ghost. It was like I had taken over someone else's life. But in exchange for everything I had, I got everything I have: I gave up a life for a life. I traded in the old one for whatever was in stock—in a new gender, a new place, a new name. Looking back I see that was an act of mad desperation, a final escape attempt from a prison of my own making. I had no idea what a life outside what I knew would be like. I simply had no idea what I was getting into. Making that leap of faith has been exciting, but also terrifying, and often very lonely. I've often asked myself: have I made a good trade? I think so.
