NIH Says It Will No Longer Recognize the Research Fellows’ Union NIH leadership said the union “should never have been certified,” in an email to the union’s leadership.

NIH leadership wants to strip worker's rights from the majority of scientists on its campuses.

But, the NIH does not get to say whether we are a union or not. We do, and we are no strangers to having to fight for our union. Time for a short history lesson. 1/n

The first step is a court-mandated treatment program, but any failure to adhere to the program can be put in state conservatorship.

Forced treatment doesn't work well, making a sentence likely.

Very elegant simulation study!

"Our simulations show that the simple principle of a declining reference point as a deadline approaches explains shifts in subjective value and effort-based choices, providing a mechanistic account of phenomena previously linked to scarcity, FOMO, and related effects"

Newsom threatens California counties for failing to use his new mental health court Gov. Gavin Newsom threatened to pull funding from counties that aren’t taking advantage of a new program intended to help people with severe mental illness.

This is a willful misuse of mental health diagnosis to imprison people.

The alibi of AI: algorithmic models of automated killing - Digital War The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Automated Target Recognition (ATR) optimises martial prophecies of perpetual threat while simultaneously exonerating the politically inclined prosecution of ...

apropos of nothing:

A stark reality has therefore emerged in modern warfare: ...AI is reliably providing an alibi for the prosecution of wholesale methods of killing without, in turn, provoking much by way of substantive political censure or legal accountability.

Rarely have such minimal consequences been delivered to so richly deserving a person. Would that we are finally free of this malign presence in public life, who has returned from disgrace far too many times already. Fuck you, Larry.

The Misuses of the University - Public Books Have the funds that might have trained the next generation of scholars at the nation’s first research university have been blown on ostentatious new buildings?

“Everyone thinks universities have to do what donors want because they pay the bills. But that gets it backward, and not just at Hopkins.”

I highly recommend reading this piece.

UCSD, facing federal cuts, will no longer guarantee funding for incoming grad students The school warns admitted first-year students that their support packages are contingent on state and federal funding.

It’s PhD admission season in the US and elsewhere. Is anyone collecting and sharing info about what admissions letters are saying this year, especially in the neuro/psych/bio space? Last year there were some (unfortunate) changes at some Unis, eg

Donate to Alexis Goldstein for Maryland Alexis Goldstein is running for Congress in Maryland's 6th district because we deserve leaders who shows as much bravery as ordinary people are showing in defense of their neighbors.

Last week, I was fired in retaliation for confronting DOGE staff in 2025. Today, I launch my campaign for U.S. Congress in Maryland’s 6th district.

Marylanders show enormous bravery in defense of our communities. #MD06 deserves a Rep as brave as its residents.

This hasn't stopped in Los Angeles, it's just no longer "news" - the only reason this kidnapping was reported is be because it happened directly in front of an NPR journalist who writes on immigration.

ChatGPT "Absolutely Wrecked" at Chess by Atari 2600 Console From 1977 Despite all its advances, ChatGPT still, seemingly, is less smart than an Atari simulator on beginner mode.

like i love this story and I think it reveals something important. the atari is encoding a ton of information about the rules of chess explicitly in a very small amount of data, and the associational model, despite a much larger amount of data & computation, does not effectively model the game

What people are doing here is beautiful. It's a tragic beauty, but a real one
