It's about music that was spreading its wings during a time of the highest racial tension, music that wasn't only discouraged but outright banned in some southern cities. So it is important. The Irish Diddy was there to show that Irish Americans also faced a level of discrimination.

It definitely is, Ryan said as much. The music does progress the story even though the characters don't tell story through song.

Except for that Irish Diddy, that was incredibly important to the narrative
