I don't think many newer make fights seem as tense as Frieren. It's something inherently different compared to older shows like Hajime no Ippo that does a similar thing with tension.
I think anime nowadays tries to get into large fights right away or have big exposition dumps to just jump into fights, but I often feel there's no tension in them at all and it's moreso for spectacle than it is to make me feel like the fight could go either way.
But it contrasts that either A, with how the opposition (Demons or other Antagonistic Forces) feel regarding the same thing or B, with Ideology and how it effects their actions.
There's a level of tension in Frieren fights that builds upon itself over time and episodes of not only the character's mindsets and how they approach life, combat, loss etc.
"The Journey not the Destination" is a big part of not just the show's world, but how they build up to big action-packed fights in the show too.
As much as action is cool in anime, I LOVE how Frieren spends time building the world, characters and it's theme of time and connections with characters.
