CBC Radio’s Day 6 asked me to come on the show to talk about the long awaited arrival of SCTV to streaming (in Canada only, on Prime). What took it so long? And why do I say it’s the greatest TV show of all time?

Here’s the interview and it’s on the radio Saturday am

Shawn Micallef: Toronto’s snow removal this year left a lot to be desired — no matter what the city told you Toronto’s snow removal this year seems like a lost opportunity to show how a progressive elected official can fix things that are broken — and communicate that clearly.

Excellent column by @shawnmicallef.bsky.social on this winter’s nightmarish snow removal. www.thestar.com/opinion/cont...

Working with ECW was a no-brainer given their excellent work documenting Toronto history and counter-culture scenes. (Also they’re publishing Don Pyle’s new memoir! I’m in good company)

Will check out. It’s been years since I watched either of those sets.

Probably a graveyard of 70mm parts in Chicago.

Are these on either of the Shout! sets?

I have rewatched that series so many times. I initially stopped during the first episode cause they introduce Joe in such a Draper-esque manner that I was like “nah… I’ve seen this before.” Glad I went back to it.

I wrote about the history of Cinecycle, now operated by @cfmdcfilm.bsky.social, for @thestar.com last summer www.thestar.com/entertainmen...

At the very least, not mentioning Revue, Lightbox, or Cinecycle… Little Prince is a neat little space, but it’s a curio. Enjoyed watching a torrented copy of Drive-Away Dolls there a couple years ago.

I asked everyone I spoke whether or not we have enough screens at the moment, and the overwhelming answer was no. We have so many creative people with creative ideas. There are dormant shells of cinemas all over the city, and so many potential micro-cinema spaces. Here’s hoping.

Against overwhelming odds, Toronto’s beloved rep theatres are thriving: ‘People are starved for this kind of experience’ Audacious programming and a community of movie lovers are powering the Revue, the Fox, the Paradise and Carlton Cinemas.

ICYMI, I celebrated our local cinemas in last weekend’s @thestar.com (tried to include as many venues, series & voices — we’re genuinely spoiled here at the moment) www.thestar.com/entertainmen...

Also, fun fact: Cinecycle’s Martin Heath was involved in the creation of the Electric Cinema before moving to Canada.

Happy to see at least two Canadian mentions — the log cabin Park in Clear Lake, MB, and the Little Prince in Stratford, ON, but were they included because of their uniqueness and quirkiness?

The 100 Greatest Cinemas In The World Right Now Classic kinos, cult film temples and fabulous picture palaces from across the planet

Tough competition here, but this Toronto resident & cinema historian is doing a very Toronto resident thing & calling out Toronto erasure. Can’t believe that not a single one of our houses were mentioned.

Why Cineplex’s Struggles Might Be the Best Thing to Happen to Movie Lovers The future of film-going is looking smaller, independent and more innovative, according to arts journalist and theatre historian Eric Veillette

I’m a guest on Do Not Pass Go, talking future of theatrical exhibition in Canada, how Cineplex went from being the underdog to everything it fought against, the regional, regulatory struggles faced by indie theatres & what the landscape could look like in 5 years.

Nova Scotia budget cuts publishing grant in blow to sector Program’s end is a major blow to independent publishers trying to carry the torch of Canadian storytelling

New: The elimination of Nova Scotia’s publishing funding has left the book sector reeling in a province that often depends on its independent houses to preserve its history and tell its stories.

Some worry it could set a precedent for other provinces www.theglobeandmail.com/culture/arti...
