I did see the Hives but they were headlining. Weird thing was at the time there was an odd atmosphere because it had been put about by the press that they were a manufactured band 'Who is Randy Fitzimmons?'. I knew it was Niklas's nom de plume but lots of local musicians turned up to sneer

I'm not sure, I know he was the new boy and basically miming. It was a bizarre career move TBH. I'd love to have been a fly on the wall for the "it didn't really work out" conversation. Still, some things happen for a reason and it made him more determined. Our gain!

Ian basically told him, go back to Birmingham, you shouldn't abandon your mates (Ian had done similar which is ironically what Song For Jeffrey was about)

It was, they were road seasoned where the Stones were out of practice. One of many reasons the film was shelved

That bit during Sympathy For The Devil on Rock And Roll Circus where Mick takes off his top to reveal the (obviously temporary) tattoos - and bearing in mind it's about six songs in - if that was you and me the whole thing would be smudged with sweat. Some people are just base clay (in Bangs' words)

It's weird because I always think of Pawn Hearts and Godbluff as double albums. They're not but they just feel like it. I had PH on CD first then picked up a vinyl copy and actually thought "where's the other disc?". Oh, of course, silly me

I have yes. Godbluff was the second album I bought, love the way the songs - once they hit that VDGG groove - could continue indefinitely.

It almost feels like a proto-glam album in places, but I guess Queen Bitch was instrumental in bridging that particular gap

A great track but I think they're one of the only Eric's scene bands who didn't have at least one member who went on to be a huge cult (or even mainstream) artist

It makes me laugh how many acts spend years going "Nah, it's bullshit man, we don't need that approval'. Until they get inducted

It's why I give zero credence to the RnRHOF inductees. Well, not the artists, the ethos behind it. It stinks of hipper than thou

Yeah, that whole RNRHOF rockist entitlement. The push/pull of 'Paul Is Naff' theory that I thought we'd put to bed by now (I mean how many times was John naff?).

The transatlantic perspective is always a bit weird because it plays to a British audience who remember differently. I watched the Punk series on Prime at Xmas and the first episodes were great but then from the mid 80s it switched to the US as if nothing punk or punk-like occurred in the UK therein

The Remains - Don't Look Back
Lenny Kaye's Nuggets introduced the soulful garage rock of Barry Tashian and The Remains to a new generation of fuzz fanatics. The band were also one of the support acts for the final Beatles concert at Candlestick Park
