It's been a good winter for Long-eared Owls in Manhattan. Two spent much of February in Central Park. This was one of two that appeared in Fort Tryon Park. 🦉 ❤️

This winter has brought continuing close views of Common Goldeneyes from Governors Island. These diving ducks, despite their name, are generally rare near shore on Manhattan waters.

This winter's extreme cold brought many locally-rare ducks to Manhattan waters, including this Canvasback on the Harlem River in Swindler Cove Park, still present there on Tuesday.

Central Park's Reservoir remains iced over, with a growing area of open water by the Fountain where gulls, geese, and ducks congregate.

A rare Iceland Gull visited the still-frozen Central Park Reservoir on Saturday. These gulls live mainly in the Arctic, but some move south in winter.

Bald Eagles were fishing off of ice floes on the Hudson River, saving the energy cost of flying and getting closer to the fish they wanted to catch. This one, seen at 79th Street on Friday, already was eating its catch. 🦅 🧡 🐟
