Angel was born in a secluded part of the ocean to a leafy sea dragon mother and weedy sea dragon father. His mother passed away when he was young, and his father was absent, leaving him and his twin sister, Molly, to be raised for a short while by their older brother. Soon, the twins were on their own, surviving by helping one another learn the ways of the ocean. All mers are born with some ability to perform magic, with most having only a slight amount of magic in their blood. Angel was born with a somewhat above average level of magic that he barely knows how to use outside of making plants grow. Molly received much more magic potential when she was born. Even without the knowledge of how to use it, Molly has a capacity for magic that rivals Overlords. The Overlords of the Sea that know of her desperately want to own her soul to siphon her power for themselves, as a mer's magic power grows concurrently with each soul they own.
One day, Molly is kidnapped by land-dwellers to be sold off on shore. Angel is unable to rescue her in time and becomes determined to find and save her. He resorts to selling his soul to an Overlord for the ability to walk on land, unbeknownst that Valentino had been waiting for the opportunity to use Angel for a chance to one day gain Molly's power. Angel's contract with Valentino allows him to use glamour sourced in the bangles he is enchanted with. On land, he appears as any other two-legged being, with a single, unremovable gold ring as his source of Valentino's magic. He uses his new ability to travel on the surface world to desperately search for his sister in various towns and cities.
