In 2017, he was investigated by the FAA after landing his yellow Aviat Husky on a taxiway at John Wayne Airport, mistaking the taxiway for a runway and narrowly missing a commercial airliner.
He was injured in 2015 after landing his World War II-era two-seater plane on a golf course just off the end of the runway at Santa Monica Airport.
But it hasnβt always been smooth sailing for the Star Wars actor. Ford has been behind a number of incidents that could have been life-threatening.
Ford first took flying lessons after college but ran out of money to do more. Once he reached his 50s (and with cash less of a problem!) he renewed his training in part to "see if I could learn something new.β Ever since, he has been collecting and flying vintage planes.

So I took off. I was nervous the whole time until I came around and landed. After that first landing, it was just like one of those things where you say, βOK, I can do this.β I just kept going around and around. In fact, they had to tell me to stop.β
Dorn recalls his first solo: βYou pull over to the side and [the CFI] gets out, and he says, βOK, take it around,'β Dorn said. βI got to the end of the runway and was getting ready to take off, and I thought to myself, βOK, Mister Big Talk, you wanted to learn how to fly. Letβs see what you can do.β
During the βDeep Space Nineβ series, Dorn went from pretend starship lieutenant to actual airplane pilot who has flown with the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds. In addition, heβs on the Air Force Heritage Foundationβs advisory board.

For more information about Coleman, visit www.womenshistory.org/.../biograph...
After returning to the U.S., Coleman began barnstorming the country. She dazzled spectators by walking on the wings while aloft or parachuting from the plane while a co-pilot took the controls. Tragically she died as a passenger on a test flight in 1926, but her legacy will never be forgotten.
In France, she began a seven-month course in flying a Nieuport Type 82, a 27-foot-long biplane with a 40-foot wingspan. She received her international pilotβs license on June 15, 1921, from the FΓ©dΓ©ration AΓ©ronautique Internationale.
She began her aviation journey by enrolling at the flight school founded by the aviation pioneers Gaston and RenΓ© Caudron in northern France. This was due to the fact that flight schools in the U.S. wouldnβt take her because she was both African American and a woman.
FAMOUS PILOT FRIDAY: Bessie Coleman
In 1921 Bessie Coleman became the first black woman in the United States to earn a pilotβs license.
When heβs not flying or teaching, Tate enjoys watching sports, playing golf, and spending time with family and friends.
Thank you for all you do here at Tennessee Flight Training, Tate!
βOne aspect I enjoy about my job is seeing the progress of students over time. Seeing a student with no aviation experience and turning him or her into a skilled pilot is very rewarding to me,β Tate said.
