When teams are trusted with a meaningful outcome, given the freedom to decide how to achieve it, properly supported, and allowed to become a real team - performance stops being something you manage and starts being something that emerges.

It really is that simple.

Product Delivery Tip: Know something about the people you’re building for - their needs and their context - before you build it. That’s it. #Product #UserCentred #Delivery #Agility

Or maybe AI just more deeply engrains that bureaucratic inertia of obfuscates it?

Before I write any Interview Question, I write its Intent. What am I really trying to learn about the candidate, their context, their journey? Then I work back from that. Every question needs a purpose - and clarity on where that β€œneed to know” comes from. #Hiring #Leadership #Interviews #Culture

People are not Resources. The #language we use has a massive impact on how we think about, #plan and deliver #products, the assumptions we make about #scaling up, work saturation, #cognitiveLoad and performance. Here's a helpful guide.

Two years of the Flutter Agility Community of Practice! πŸŽ‚πŸŽ‰
Today marks the second birthday of our Agility Community of Practice!

We launched the Community of Practice on 9 February 2024 with a simple idea: create a space where people who care about better delivery, collaboration and innovation could learn together, share openly and raise the bar for how we work.

Since then… we’ve come a long way.
πŸ‘‰ Reached over 700 members
πŸ‘‰ Delivered 30+ events
πŸ‘‰ Welcomed international speakers from across the group and industry
πŸ‘‰ Created a platform for people at every stage of their journey - from new starters to expert practitioners

βœ… Business Analysts, Engineers, Agile Coaches, Mentors and Leaders
βœ… People Leaders, Facilitators and Experts in Organisational Transformation

We've had it all!
πŸ’‘ Colleagues swapping stories, techniques and hard-won lessons
🧠 Group coaching, silent coaching and deep reflection sessions
🫢 Retrospectives, case studies and personal stories
πŸ“Š Dashboards, metrics and JQL deep dives
πŸŽ“ Remote training, in-person courses, and partnerships with local communities and trusted experts
🀝 But most importantly, it's been about helping people find each other

It’s never just been about events.
It’s about capability, confidence and community.

Thank you to everyone who’s hosted, spoken, coached, organised or simply shown up with curiosity and generosity. You’re the reason this works.

Here’s to year three - more learning, more sharing and more impact.

#tom-updates a busy day talking product led - benefits, metrics and measures. Reviewing and tuning comms. Aligning roles and responsibilities. Built a 60 minute training course on team collaboration and performance. Plus some extra backlog refinement too with extra paired working for good measure.

Conference Conway’s Law 🎭
You go to a β€œtech conference” and quickly realise the content - and who’s on stage - is shaped less by technology and more by a company’s politics, internal positioning, and unresolved dramas. The system always leaks into the product. Even when the product is a conference.

#tom-updates currently selecting music for tomorrows training course on Clean Language. Music for the waiting room and the break time yes. But never the activities. Because that’s participant thinking and solo time. It’s their space, not mine. Let them choose their own soundtrack. #facilitation

A talk (not a presentation) is a product. Born from an idea and shaped by relentless feedback. What looks great on paper often isn’t in practice - so talks evolve, pause, pivot, or get binned. Old parts resurface, messages sharpen. Iteration beats perfection.

#tom-updates a lot of work in process items were finished today. Regular comms and alignment syncs went in calendars. Provided feedback on workshop plans. Got feedback on designs for change communities. Reviewed my own agile coaching growth wheel. Made plans for this year’s professional development.

#tom-updates today saw a great facilitation case study in a community of practice. Shared public and private contract concepts in agile coaching, consulting, ethics. Did work on an op model. Peer reviewed work. Got a peer review. Began automating messaging in slack channels for change comms.

Well, that was fun πŸ˜‚

Five minutes of scoping, a quick pre-brief and validation - and then just like that ✨ a 45-minute workshop ready to go.

Together we surfaced the conditions and practices needed to increase user testing and experimentation across government and the public sector. Even better, the participant feedback was fantastic 🀩

Onboarding is more than Admin. It’s a Leadership Choice.
The first few weeks in a new role, team, or context shape confidence, trust, and momentum. Fast access to tools, platforms, and information isn’t a perk. It sets expectations about how quickly someone can become effective and how supported they feel along the way.

⏱️ When access is slow or context is missing, friction appears quickly. Uncertainty and anxiety are common, especially when joining a new team and trying to understand how things really work. Energy gets spent navigating the system rather than learning within it.

🧠 This is where Developer Experience and Employee Experience meet. Thoughtful onboarding removes friction and provides context. Not just what tools exist, but why they exist and how work flows. That context helps people sense-make and begin to navigate with confidence.

🌳 Leadership means investing in capability. Capabilities shouldn’t be built only when they’re urgently needed. They need to be created, cultivated, and maintained - in a constant state of readiness for use and deployment. Like an effective runbook, an effective onboarding pack needs to pass the 3 AM test.

🧠 That often means prioritising investment in resources, material, and experience over the latest urgent priority. The former creates a system that mitigates exceptions. The latter just reacts to them.

πŸš€ Done well, this reduces overall lead time to productivity. People move faster because they know what question to ask next and where to go for answers.
Good onboarding sets people up to succeed.

It’s 'Team Craft'. And it’s not a Project - it’s Ops.

Remove fear and blame from the conversation and everyone achieves more.

You gain time back. Ideas are shared more freely. Innovation increases. Collaboration becomes an advantage rather than a cost.
