We also observed that although people do not prioritize themselves when sharing their opinions concerning who should hold *hypothetical* rights over AI-generated images, they clearly favor themselves when their evaluations determine real monetary awards.
We held an incentivized AI art competition and found that people believe both users and those whose creations were used to train GenAI models should hold some of the rights granted by copyright protection.
What are laypeople's opinions concerning copyright for AI-generated images? Who do they think should hold any rights over AI-generated images? How do their opinions change depending on whether they are the ones using GenAI?
