Had an amazing time making this video! Thanks @oxfordsparks.bsky.social

Had an amazing time leading one of the volcano workshops for #OxploreFestival ! We explored the ingredients needed for an explosive eruption and got students familiar with Earth Sciences as a subject
Great talk by @sofiadellasala.bsky.social looking at hydrothermal records at Santorini in the @iavceisubmarine.bsky.social session. Convincing evidence of vigorous hydrothermal activity in the past preceding eruptions and a great demonstration of why we should look at hydrothermal records.
Shoutout to @allypeccia.bsky.social, @abigaillily.bsky.social, @sofiadellasala.bsky.social, @davidmpyle.bsky.social, @foradamifera.bsky.social, and so many more doing all the great research coming out of Exp398 π
Was so fun to record this episode and talk about @isobelyeo.bsky.social's HYDROMOX project!
Sofia Della Sala with her title slide about to give a talk on hydrothermal activity in the Santorini caldera at GEOMAR, Kiel.
@sofiadellasala.bsky.social presenting her work at the @geomarkiel.bsky.social tephra workshop, on sediments from Santorini caldera recovered during IODP 398 @ukiodp.bsky.social
Special thanks to @gemmaportlock.bsky.social, @mikeaclare.bsky.social and Anna Lichtschlag for teaching me all things fluids and cores!
The @ukri.org HYDROMOX cruise has come to an end. What a mammoth project @isobelyeo.bsky.social pulled together, I am so grateful to be part of the team that has successfully explored the hydrothermal systems at Santorini and Kolumbo and I can't wait for the science that will come of it!
The crew recovering an instrument over the side of the vessel.
Recovering our final OBEM! Weβve deployed and recovered 67 instruments on this expedition and, while you never put anything youβre not willing to lose in the sea, itβs very nice to bring everything home. Special thanks to the crew for their support with operations. @ukri.org @noc.ac.uk
One of the best sunsets yet aboard the RRS Discovery. Only a little over a week left of this research expedition!
Saw my first hydrothermal chimney today at Kolumbo Submarine volcano as part of the @ukri.org HYDROMOX project led by @isobelyeo.bsky.social, loved seeing what I have been reading about for the last 2 years with my own eyes!!
Sampling hydrothermal mounds on the seafloor of the Santorini caldera as part of the @ukri.org HYDROMOX project to understand the fluid flow that feeds them @isobelyeo.bsky.social @sofiadellasala.bsky.social @gemmaportlock.bsky.social @noc.ac.uk
ROV dives, gravity coring, geophysical surveys and getting ready for fluid sampling on board the RRS Discovery - itβs been busy inside the Santorini caldera on the @ukri.org HYDROMOX project today! @noc.ac.uk @isobelyeo.bsky.social @gemmaportlock.bsky.social @sofiadellasala.bsky.social
The women onboard for the HYDROMOX expedition on the deck of the ship.
On International Womenβs Day Iβd like to take the opportunity to highlight womenβs contributions to this project and marine science. This expedition couldnβt run without our geophysicists, geologists, ROV pilots and crew, many of whom are women. Theyβre inspirational. @noc.ac.uk
My first ever time working with an ROV! So exciting to see the seafloor of the caldera
First core on deck during the HYDROMOX expedition in the Santorini Caldera!! Was amazing to understand how the samples go from the seafloor to the lab bench @mikeaclare.bsky.social
Expedition 398 E&O Officer Susan just published a book on the amazing cores we drilled in and around Santorini.
It's great for anyone (layperson to expert) who wants to learn about these stunning cores.
The best thing of it all? You can download it π³πΌπΏ π³πΏπ²π² here:

An electromagnetic sensor being deployed over the side of the vessel at night.
Great 24-hours deploying the geophysical equipment that will collect the seismic and electromagnetic data inside and outside the Santorini caldera. This information will help us to map hydrothermal fluid flow and earthquakes for the @noc.ac.uk @ukri.org funded HYDROMOX project. Photo: Dan Bourne
I am on my first ever fieldwork expedition! My PhD focuses on the hydrothermal system in Santorini, working with @davidmpyle.bsky.social. We have lots of exciting operations on HYDROMOX @ukri.org that will gives us a better insight into Santorini's caldera seafloor
