Milestones in the history of women in medicine and biomedical science at U-M While their path was not smooth, faces and names from the past and present show the power of persistence

156 years ago this month, the @umich.edu Regents began the process of making a landmark decision:

To allow women to study medicine along with men.

That fall, U-M became the first truly coeducational #medschool.

I trace what came after in this story:

Now, to be fair, the first female med students had to have all but one of their classes completely separate from the men. But that only lasted a few years.

And even after that, their anatomy classes were separate for years - and anatomy labs were separate for decades.

But it was still a BIG deal.

The algorithm will see you now? Patients say not without a doctor nearby Artificial intelligence may be reshaping modern medicine, but when it comes to their own health, patients still want to know a real person is watching the screen.

A new study from Professor @nicholson.bsky.social and others found that U.S. adults were significantly more likely to trust in medical AI in scenarios with oversight of a clinician and other protections in place.

Motorcycle helmet repeal linked to 26% rise in crash-related hospital costs A study of motorcycle crash-related hospital costs in Michigan and three comparison states shows a rise after the helmet requirement was repealed.

I remember when Michigan's legislature repealed the motorcycle helmet law, and the governor went along.

Now, a team of University of Michigan trauma surgeons has published a study of what happened next, just in terms of hospital costs for crash survivors. www.michiganmedicine.org/health-lab/m...

The Fish Doorbell β€” The Fish Doorbell Did you spot a fish? Press the Fish Doorbell! This alerts our lock operator to let the fish through. The Fish Doorbell is in Utrecht, NL.

It's Fish Doorbell season again!! I am completely obsessed with this thing. It's an aquatic gate in the Netherlands that lets fish pass through so they can go about their lives despite the dam. Watch the livestream. If you see a fish, ring the doorbell, and the gates open!! 🐟❀️

Since we have 2 months of 2026 data now, we can see if the trend we saw last year holds up: does research from the current year get shared more on Bluesky or X-Twitter?

As you can see here, we still see days regularly where Bluesky's volume of research sharing is markedly higher than Twitter.

Repeal Of Motorcycle Helmet Laws Are Dangerous And Expensive New study finds that the costs of removing motorcycle helmet laws continue to rise for both hospitals and taxpayers.

@umich.edu has calculated the shared cost of what seems like a personal choice -- helmet use & motorcycles. There was a 26% increase in crash patient costs, threatening already strained trauma systems. More from @drninashapiro.bsky.social in @forbes.com 🏍️

Are European supermarkets actually better and cheaper than American? Prices, food variety, disposable income and shopping habits all play into the differences between stores on either side of the Atlantic.

Medical debt & bankruptcy after traumatic injury in Michigan: Study shows who’s most vulnerable Combining statewide trauma registry data and credit bureau data shows privately insured and uninsured patients face highest risk of severe, persistent financial burden after trauma

As medical debt grows in importance on the #healthpolicy front, our IHPI team leveraged Michigan's statewide trauma registryβ€”based at our instituteβ€”and deidentified credit report data to examine the lasting financial effects of traumatic injury. What we found: ihpi.umich.edu/news-events/...

How heartbreaking.

It may be too soon, but this recent piece by one of our child psychiatrists here at Michigan addresses a real need: for parents of teens to say their kids that it’s ok to come to them if they’re worried that a friend is about to harm themselves: www.newsweek.com/doctor-truth...

Americans don’t want war.

We want healthcare.

We want good education for all, free of debt.

We want everyone to have housing.

We want livable wages.

The ruling class gets rich off war while the working class dies.

Charles Best standing outdoors in front of a two-storey brick house. He is leaning against the front of a car, smiling, and wearing a light-colored jacket over a shirt and tie. The house behind him has shuttered windows and a central doorway, with a chimney visible on the left side of the roof. Trees and grass surround the building. The photograph is in black and white and framed from about mid-torso upward.

The work Charles Best did in the discovery of insulin was so critical that Sir Frederick Banting shared half his Nobel Prize money with him.
Eventually, the Nobel Prize Committee apologized for omitting him, and stated it was a mistake.
This is his story.
