You may notice from my Seven Wonders threads that the story of many of these monuments ends with "and then the British Museum excavated the ruins and took any sculptures and reliefs they found back to their museum. There is nothing left there since"

Me and @aran.pink wrote a song about foxes
I would love it if you would check it out and share it
Nothing bad can happen if you do

π° Stone Age skeletons from Hungary suggest Neolithic gender roles were fluid, with some individuals buried with material culture and skeletal changes associated with the opposite sex.

It's not that, it's that our fashion is too fast
Thank you! I actually went looking for something like this a while back but came up empty-handed.
Unfortunately, the venn diagram overlap of people who like math and people who play the guitar is not large. But if you fall within it: www.ethanhein.com/wp/2019/why-...
So the ideal realistic case for code LLMs right now is still sounding to me like "we're going to create long-term maintenance problems that unaided human minds cannot even comprehend"
Very possible in that sort of situation, yeah. And even if writing the code IS way faster, lots of important types of testing won't be because they still needs actual users. And that work was already basically always badly under-resourced bc mgmt sees new code as an asset but testing as a cost.
It depends on the software, but usually the biggest was some form of "figuring out exactly *what* you need to write", and the next biggest was testing.
LLMs are supposed to help the testing too, but that means if it gets the spec wrong it'll write the tests to match the screwup & it'll look fine.
In code-LLM discussions I keep seeing people talking as if the time it takes to type in code is/was a big development bottleneck, and I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. In my whole career that was only ever true when developing brand-new software from scratch, & never stayed true for long.
Book about the search for the identity of a soldier killed in an avalanche in WW1, called βUnder a Blanket of Iceβ.

My book about WW1 on the Italian Front.
This new(ish) book is fascinating. Itβs about the search for the identity of a soldier who melted out of the Popera Glacier in 1983. He was killed in one of the avalanches that overwhelmed the Italians on November 9, 1916. You can read about these extraordinary events, in English, in #TiTM.

Please enjoy the single most amazing quote from a paleontologist I have ever read: βThe animal literally cemented itselfβand its nether regionsβinto eternal history like the movie stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.β π§ͺ www.scientificamerican.com/article/see-...

Today I read about a famous gay couple who ran an inn on the foothill path towards Yosemite for 50 years. They met as young men on a ship to SF during the Gold Rush and were inseparable. People knew them as a couple.

White cartoon rabbit wearing a pink skirt and boots and holding a sunflower that has magic and whimsy written on it, and a flame with political outrage written on it. The background is green. Black text above the rabbit reads We navigate these times by keeping hold of both
Having watched it for the first time a couple years ago -- there's definitely some really dated jokes but it holds up REALLY well, and with the exception of a few specific episodes, way kinder to its trans character than I'd have expected for the 60s.
