Graffiti on marble at the Hagia Sofia: Younger Futhark runes are marked in shaky hand on the marble, which likely required a lot of effort, spelling out Halfdan was here.
For centuries they were thought to just be scratches in the marble, perhaps structural damage from earthquakes. In 1964 it was determined these markings weren't random but writing: the Hagia Sophia bears Viking Era graffiti, runes that say "Halfdan was here." #WyrdWednesday
I'm pretty sure I'm ok to use the John Donne poem since it's way out of copyright...right?
And I'm hoping it's the same for the Barrie quote? (FYIβhe died in 1937)
And would this apply internationally? I'm based in the UK, but my books are published all over.
Any help would be appreciated!
Hey author pals, question on using quotations and copyright:
I've got two quotations in my newest historical WIP. The first is a poem by John Donne published in 1633.
The second is three lines from a speech J.M. Barrie gave in 1922, which I was hoping to use as my epigraph.

The American dream has always relied on violence, exclusion, and control. It was state policy when George Washington weaponized disease and starvation and ordered the destruction of Native American villages, and it's the same imperialist policy passed down through time to this day.

this is my good friendβs fundraiser, weβve been friends for over a decade and I am doing everything I can to help her get out of Kansas and to a better situation.
I am able to provide safe housing and locally coordinated supports and anything you can do, just sharing even, helps tremendously

I hate that the debate we are constantly having in the 21st century is "we have to let the most evil fuckers alive do whatever the hell they want VS no we don't"

A square painting against a white background. The painting depicts a landscape with blue and green foliage over an orange underpainting. In the center a white and blue star emerges from the foliage and a glowing blue halo surrounds it illuminating the leaves.

refusing to participate in corporate bullshit as a consumer is only ONE of the ways you can fight for a better world, but it is not only real and effective, it opens up your imagination to getting your material needs met outside of capitalism and/or strengthening your local economy
just gonna throw out a quick reminder that in America police kill a yearly average of 3 civilians per day, routinely in situations very similar to these ICE killings, and decades of explicit support for police impunity by US politicians is why ICE feels theyre able to get away with this right now
I think posts that contain AI images and video should have to be clearly marked as such, and have a system tagβ¦

Old tweet that says when I was young I thought things wre bad because solutions were complicated and now I'm old and realize things are bad because solutions are simple but will inconvenience affluent people (or those who aspire to be) and religious fanatics.
I didn't save this tweet but somebody did and it feels worth resurfacing
semi-regular reminder that ICE was only created in 2003
when you are asked to imagine a world without ICE, you're basically being asked to remember where you were when Lilo & Stitch came out

My favorite part of reading is when a book gets so good you have to set it down, (finger marking the page), and just let your mind be blown for a minute before picking it back up again.
All righty -- this year's writerly resolution is live, should you care to read it. The tl;dr is it's actually quite an optimistic read, so hopefully it'll give you some juice to kick open the new year and put words to stories that need to be told.

This goes for all the people who are still refusing to mask, in this the year of our lord 2026, SIX YEARS into an ongoing airborne plague because "I might get funny looks" or "but then I'd have to skip brunch"
My whole life, advocating war has been fed to me as βthe adult position,β akin to drinking your coffee black or reading the business section of the newspaper. Letβs be very clear β war is the childish nonsense of impulsive destructive idiots playing baby-brained video games with real human lives.
When we plead with you to wear a mask, weβre trying to help.

Tossed on the glittering air they soar and skim, Whose voices make the emptiness of light A windy palace. Quavering from the brim Of dawn, and bold with song at edge of night, They clutch their leafy pinnacles and sing Scornful of man, and from his toils aloof Whose heart's a haunted woodland whispering; Whose thoughts return on tempest-baffled wing; Who hears the cry of God in everything, And storms the gate of nothingness for proof.
That Siegfried Sassoon sure could write 'em (when he wanted to).
