I felt really peaceful as I took a break while hiking and filling up my water bottle with this ice cold spring water that almost tasted somehow sweet and gentle. This was during summer when the snow up there melts and water gets filtered naturally, and brings abundant water supply for us

Tokyo or Japan isn’t of course perfect, but the stress level was definitely lower for me (again as a JP person born in Japan, which is a privilege). Not sure if I’m missing home or just the feeling of peace

Didn’t some people say Iranian girls are oppressed and can’t get education then they literally ended up bombing girls school? (I know the quality / segregation problem, but?????)

I genuinely didn’t understand… at a train station cops came in and forced him to exit the train asking if he had a pipe. They could’ve asked anyone in the same wagon, like me, but went straight to this black guy who was doing nothing. I had never seen that before… is this normal?

Yesterday I witnessed an arrest of a person right in front of me for the first time and that reaffirmed my opinion… as far as I observed the whole time while riding train in the same wagon as him, there was nothing to give reasonable doubt. Shocked to witness that

Why is the 20th c. US history trying so hard to do a rerun I have read some books and I didn’t like the ending

It’s like you tried to put all kinds of goodies into your burrito then realized the tortilla you have is not big enough. You forced it anyway and now it’s a mess

Got some feedback about my writing that it’s kind of jumbled and it needs to be organized more. So I need to channel into some Marie Kondo energy, but the problem is very few things spark joy at this point

Thanks everyone for your replies — @zacharyschrag.bsky.social has helpfully compiled it for his extremely useful blog site: historyprofessor.org/methodology/...
I would also recommend his @princetonupress.bsky.social book for anyone teaching or doing research: press.princeton.edu/books/paperb...

One of our LA DOR call to action today was to never gaman or be otonashii (quiet) and instead be yakamashii (loud) about our values and the world we’d like to have. We all gotta be loud

Nikkeis during this time is like “ok but I’m too busy with DoR right now, let’s catch up after” “sounds good which one are you going” “just three this year” “oh cool” “see you at the terminal island one then”

Great job for the Berkeley NSU to organize such a great event with lots of activities!! We went as guest speakers for UCR NSU DoR, and my friend gave a talk at UCLA one too. The LA one is today! I appreciate this day being a unique opportunity for us Nikkeis to bring the community together.

Met up with a former student of mine who reached out after a year. They’re doing great work, and I felt truly privileged and honored to have been part of their academic and personal journey.
Now I know why my high school teachers were so excited when I reached out to them. It means so much.

In a historic vote, Tennessee Volkswagen workers get their first union contract
Two years ago, the successful union drive at this plant was expected to spark victories throughout the South. But now, as members vote to make their contract official, momentum has fizzled.
This is a historic milestone for working people in the South.
Congratulations to the Volkswagen workers and our @uaw.org family on ratifying their first union contract. Better pay, healthcare cost reductions, job security and more — it’s #BetterInAUnion!

It is extremely difficult to be an athlete if you’re not from urban areas (less access to facilities and funding) or affluent family background. You only got what you got, but people like her work so hard and that’s a true inspiration

I was following some news re: Olympics because the daughter of my dad’s colleague is there representing Japan. She has struggled but I’m glad she got to go.
But now with a wedding proposal and a dog? It got all the more interesting

As a student from overseas in a liminal position (I guess) this was an interesting read.
“(…) Labour Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson stated that international students are treated as political footballs, not valued guests, with fees welcome but their presence rejected. “

Strawberry job is back breaking, even in the greenhouse (beds are usually tiered).
Strawberry was what Japanese farmers opted for back in 1920-30s, because few farmers wanted to do it.
100 yrs later, the job is still so hard, and these workers deserve more recognition and wages for their work.

On the horizon is the rising sun that looks like an orange fireball partially covered by thin layers of clouds. Industrial and residential neighborhood with a business district in the background
Throwback to a winter morning in Tokyo. Pacific side of the country gets super cold but crisp mornings in the winter. The other side of the island is usually so gray and snowy. Well today LA is so gray…
