Folks, it doesn’t matter how confidently you say something asinine, that doesn’t make it true. If these are the best ideas the UCP has when it comes to addressing class size and complexity, we should all be very worried.
The Premier muses about substitute teachers becoming full-time teachers. I mean…if subs, largely retired teachers, manage a classroom full time who provides coverage when teachers get sick or need to spend 3 days delivering assessments? Does she know about ongoing sub shortages across the province?
Principals and assistant principals are counted in teacher numbers. Many of those folks are already teaching in a classroom part-time, but the Premier seems to think schools can run without any admin staff? How many admins does she have running her office?
On her radio show this past weekend, Danielle Smith doubled down on her populist math. If we have 51,000 teachers and 750,000 students why aren’t our classes sizes 14 to 1? Let’s break down some obvious issues with that math.
The Education Minister says his new mandate letter will ensure Alberta students can thrive.
At a time when classrooms are overflowing into hallways, when 51,000 teachers are prepared to strike, when education is funded at the lowest level in the country.
He wants students to thrive? Please.
What problem is the UCP trying to solve with their citizenship marker? I found this article to be a thoughtful analysis of the change.
The UCP briefed media this morning on their new book rules. No one else can know the new rules until 3:00. You know, after press deadlines.
Why is the UCP suppressing commentary? This is NOT business as usual. This is a government that can’t bear to admit they made a mistake.
Do you need us to hold your hand through this, Premier? Here’s a thought, get back to the bargaining table and get a deal done with teachers that keeps our kids learning. Enough with the incompetent fumblings, do your job.
The Premier promised new rules on library books within hours, it’s been a week. Reminds me of when she promised to fix health care in 90 days. Or when she promised to build the schools Albertans need. Promises made, promises broken.
School’s back... but instead of excitement, families are feeling anxious about the state of Alberta's classrooms.

It’s my privilege to stand with education workers. Hundreds of millions of dollars in bloated private surgical contracts and yet the UCP can’t scrape together more than a few cents for support workers who haven’t seen a raise in a decade. Enough is enough.
Will next week’s budget prioritize funding for education? Or will it be more excuses from the UCP?

A Ministerial Order was issued (when education support workers went on strike) that allowed school boards to not allow in person learning for kids who have EA support in classrooms. It was challenged in the courts and an injunction against the order has been obtained.
The UCP funds education at the lowest rate in the country. They can change that, come to the table with more resources for school boards, and ensure that education support staff get paid fair wages to put food on the table. That's what Alberta needs, right now. 2/2
Today's court ruling is a strong condemnation of the UCP's failure to properly fund education. They have failed to ensure students with complex needs get the education they deserve, denying them access to the classroom. So what do parents get from Danielle Smith? Silence. 1/2
