blurb for The Lord of the Wood from Mia Tsai, author of The Memory Hunters: βAnderson imbues the novel with . . . grace to discover who you are, and . . . to arrive when you're ready. A necessary read for many, especially for those of us who need a respite before getting back to our feet.β Blurb is in a textbox against a five-photo collage featuring images of a snowy forest, a lone oak silhouetted against a sunset, a misty forest, an acorn, and a stag striding across a meadow.
The covers of The Memory Hunters by Mia Tsai and The Lord of the Wood by E.M. Anderson in a translucent yellow box against the backdrop of white flowers blooming on a tree against a blue sky. The Memory Hunter's cover is dark red, with a central image of bright red cup fungi blooming on a rotting branch, with faint outlines of mushrooms, branches, and flowers that used to be there. The Lord of the Wood's cover is blue, with a central image of a stag of foliage and flowers growing from a tree whose upper branches drip black ooze and the tagline "even a beastly woodland protector needs saving..."

I tell people that if the government is covering up the existence of aliens, NASA is absolutely not involved, because astrobiologists can't keep a secret to save their lives

People all over the world treat hospitality as sacred while this damn place CHOOSES to torture the strangers among us.
It is all so deeply evil and I am so damn tired of hearing excuses made for those who support it all.

I have literally no patience for anyone saying that trans Kansans "just" have to go to the DMV and get a new license. There was no time given for that. There was no process in place for that. There were letters sent out to some people whose licenses were invalidated, but not all.
I know itβs difficult right now, but I insist that you seek and enjoy beautiful things, even if it seems frivolous or irresponsible in the face of overwhelming horror. I want you to feed yourself artistically, spiritually, and literally, because you canβt Do The Work when youβre starving.

You, an individual, cannot "fix" the whole world. You can act at the scale of your life. You should act at the scale of your life.
Katy Naples-Mitchell, program director of the Program in Criminal Justice Policy and Management at Harvard Kennedy School, has reviewed Dankoffβs data and called it βunsurprising.β Naples-Mitchell spends time as a pro bono attorney at South Bay Jail, aka Suffolk House of Correction. She was conducting an unrelated legal visit on a recent Friday when a family walked in to pay bail for a family member, and were given a receipt by the clerk magistrate.
βTheir loved one never came out. Because instead, ICE had been alerted by the jail that this person was releasable, and so immediately upon the bail having been paidβ making the person released from state custodyβ ICE enacted their federal detainer, and took the person into federal custody,β she said. The family, she said, told her the woman who was detained had a green card with no active order of removal. βICE enacted their federal detainer. Instead β they were disappeared behind the jail,β she said.

I regularly see people wondering how it's possible that there are so many musicians and writers and film makers and artists from a tiny nation like Iceland.
And the answer is really simple: State funding for art education and artists. I literally get a salary from the government to write books.

No, but actually: why is it "missing out" if I'm choosing to...use my own brain to do work? I enjoy thinking for myself, thank you. That's how you grow as a person.
Never-ending complacency sounds like a sad way to exist.
Sorry to get radical but I donβt think itβs my job or yours to embrace, accept, understand - and certainly not to use - the thing being sold to us as AI. I donβt like any part of it, so I wonβt. Iβm missing out? Good, thatβs what I want. Youβre worried about me missing out? Thatβs fuckin weird, man.

Here's what happens: The unfortunate victim Googles a company name looking for a contact number, then calls the number thrown up by Al. This doesn't actually lead to the company in question, but rather to someone pretending to be that company, who then tries to take payment information or other sensitive details from the caller. It's not clear exactly how these fake numbers are being planted, but the best guess is that they're being published in multiple low-profile places online, alongside the names of major companies. Al Overviews then comes along and scoops them up, without running the proper checks to verify the information.
In short,
