I have only had one paper get lost and that happend due to editorial turnover. It was at the SEJ and the editor was VERY apologetic. One of the many reasons it is probably my favorite journal.

I wouldnt worry about it yet. We have two papers under review (IRLE and EI). The IRLE one went out first and we still haven’t heard back so there isn’t reason to be concerned about the EI paper. Econ is also generally much slower than the other social sciences.

I am happy to see other people are pushing back on this nonsense. Gate keepers protecting their own little fiefdoms are a cancer.

We all knew that gun sales were probably correlated across states but to this extent? probably not.

01.02.2026 23:01 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

It gets even deeper. The change in the percent change is also highly correlated.

E.g., For Google searches, the average correlation between the change in the percent change in state i and the change in the percent change in state j is a little over .6.

Not only are levels informative across states but the percent changes from t-1 to t are correlated. Here is the distribution of all the coef./correlations for NICS checks and Searches.

So this is kind of crazy to me. Using monthly google search data and NICS checks, you can easily show gun interest in state i is highly correlated with interest in state j.

But it gets much much deeper....

FFL inspections (case closure, technically) by year. Interesting because homicides bottomed out in 2014 before increasing until 2018/2019. N~200k

It really is amazing to me how terrible Brightspace is. Oh you ordered the roster based on a score? Let me reset the page so you are scrolled all the way to the left again.

Concealed-Carry Permits and Firearm Sales Are Low-Dimensional We use principal component analysis to examine population-adjusted, county-level counts of concealed-carry permits across 1,111 counties in 15 states (2006-2019

Data is used in many of my papers but I prefer you to cite this paper (if you use it) bc it relies the most on the data. Others use it as a robustness check.

hey #econsky

If you are interested in guns, check out this data: CA gun sales. Data is county level and runs from 2000-2022. Long-gun counts start in 2010.

the cool thing is we both think the other got the better deal.

I definitely learned more from you though!

I am being a little tongue-in-cheek but the result is actually significant because it suggests a large chunk of the endogenous part of gun sales/cc permits is going to be absorbed into county fixed effects. There is some year-to-year variation, but that is mostly national in origin.

Hey, #econsky if you are interested in guns, check out our new paper (with @chadtopaz.bsky.social )

The big result is that America's gun habits are predictable & stable. Culture > crime spikes. Who knew math could make firearms feel so... flat?

One of these days, I want to write a paper with someone where we use the same data and have a friendly disagreement about the interpretation of the results. Let the reader decide who is right and who is wrong.

wouldn’t go this far but the tech certainly has issues. DC makes their data easily accessible. easy to see that fireworks still cause problems.

This might be a bad take but as a guy with an off the wall tattoo (got while drunk but definitely not anything bad) I could easily see how this could accidentally happen in Europe. Especially in Croatia.
