If this is the level of reasonable dislike we’re going with this the time isn’t right for my “I don’t like poetry” level of philistine

“I am the son of the guy whose secret police force used to terrorize you, please install me or my friends, for democracy” is an amazing pitch from the shah’s son
🇹🇼 Tens of thousands of political documents from Taiwan’s years of one-party rule have been fully declassified by its top intelligence agency. All pre-1992 records have been transferred to the National Archives for public view with no redactions.

While AI might increase high quality productivity for some scholars, the burden it creates on people having to review work is just humongous. So much trash to sift through.
Last year, I reviewed around 120 papers for UCSD's Young Scholars' Conference. This year? Over 300 applications, and the influence of AI is so apparent. So many trash, AI-generated cover letters and AI generated abstracts (maybe even AI-generated research questions) make this such a slog.

Rory Truex has done some interesting work on the psychological profile of dissidents and this vignette you gave pretty much nails it. static1.squarespace.com/static/61362...
You? Being overly critical of the quality of your own work and after achieving some distance finding it is perhaps off a quality you hadn't expected?! I'M SHOCKED. SHOOK, EVEN. POSITIVELY SHAKEN.

This March Violet is now the No. 3 official at the Pentagon and he’s joined the War on China on the side of China.
One of Trump’s most consistent traits—right up there with racism and greed—is his admiration for dictators. He “fell in love” with Kim, defends MBS for murder, and praises Orbán and Putin at every turn. Yet when he claims to oppose Maduro on humanitarian grounds, the press politely plays along.
Antinomianism is all the rage in America.
A girl in a college party once told me much the same and that’s how I died
Just like creation! Which is fun symmetry.
Today it helped to look up the Spanish word for chestnut when asking a stocking guy at the grocery store where they were. This kind of interaction appears to make these people call for ethnic cleansing. These people are unwell.
Yeah, I was speaking on behalf of a group of a few Americans in that conversation I'm remembering so it seemed appropriate to me at the time.
I had thought of Taiwan but didn't want to bring up that can of worms, haha. Thanks for the Singapore example! I'm most familiar with mainland usage patterns and my own experience speaking there, so it's good to see this.
Where does 我国 mean anything other than China? Do Singaporean speakers use to refer to Singapore, for instance? Genuinely asking because I have never seen its use for anywhere else, and when I've used to it to refer to America, Chinese speakers in China have found it odd/wrong.
Plenty of democrats in foreign policy circles are happy to call him a respectable thinker so they can get invited to the right events! Scumbags.
I think the explanation that children are made by a mommy and a daddy by some mysterious process predates any need to explain the virgin birth of christ
Sarah Rogers, the State Department official who hectored Europeans about free speech, is seen here with a far-right German AfD deputy, Markus Frohnmaier, whom two Kremlin documents obtained by @spiegel.de described as "a parliamentarian under our absolute control."

Ah, I see, i misunderstood Lizza's telling of the events, I thought the relationship was concurrent with coverage.
I thought she denied the relationship with sanford - her lawyer says RFK is the only time she had a inappropriate relationship with someone she was covering? Unless somehow that statement is supposed to be construed to not include sanford? www.nytimes.com/2025/11/21/s...
