Every time I sit waiting for imaginary cars at a red light on my bike in the rain I think about how Seattle spends millions of dollars on intelligent traffic signals to save drivers a few seconds but doesn't program them to skip or shorten left turns based on car detections.

In Connecticut, legislation that bans multilevel buildings with only a single means
of egress recently passed both chambers of the General Assembly.
"We are glad that our friends in the state legislature are listening to our concerns and preventing the construction of multilevel buildings with a single stairwell," said Peter Brown, president of the Uniformed Professional Fire Fighters Association (UPFFA) of Connecticut.
"Allowing fire fighters and residents to go in opposite directions on the same set of stairs creates bottlenecking and other potential disasters. Having a second set of stairs is a critical safety feature during a fire."

Funny IAFF blog post where they show a total misunderstanding of the building code. They clearly do not understand that single-stair buildings up to three stories have long been and remain legal in Connecticut. www.iaff.org/news/states-...

As Bike Cars Overflow, Caltrain Bans Large Bikes and Panniers - Streetsblog San Francisco New rules heavily restrict the types of bikes Caltrain users can bring on board. Years ago advocates warned Caltrain that they weren't allotting enough bike space on the new trains

This need to be called out at perpetuating sexist policies that privilege bikers without child carrying, errand running responsibilities. Caltrain would never consider banning kids from trains, why is it ok to make it impossible for parents who travel bike to use the system?

The Guardian on our new study, which shows that global heating is significantly gathering speed. Our efforts to overcome our fossil fuel addiction should do the same.

Today, we examine how cities consistently overestimate the rate at which seniors downsize their homes while simultaneously incentivizing them not to downsize, and how this creates a shortage of family-sized homes for young families.

Waymo is now blocking the only eastbound through lane on Townsend, a key SF arterial. AVs have a scaling problem in cities. This isn't just inconvenience but a loss of network capacity. Waymo cuts SF's ability to move people and goods in its streets. User convenience β‰  system efficiency

but today i had a conversation that sort of blew my mind
