And in an effort to both clean up the ocean and find a way to recycle them, those materials end up in Nebraska’s biggest city...

Bags of plastic waste piled at FirstStar Fiber in Omaha have traveled nearly 4,000 miles from Honolulu. Nearly 200 tons of derelict fishing gear is pulled from the ocean every year, and some of it is being recycled in Nebraska and turned into plastic lumber.

Dead trees line the Salt Creek and Platte River near Mahoney State Park in June 2025. Horticulturists with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission were stumped when they started seeing significant dieback in many of their old bur oak trees in 2024.

It became apparent last summer that some bur oak trees at Mahoney State Park were in trouble. Dozens started dying, and the problem has only gotten worse.
