i don’t think i could be easily convinced to buy another Bausch. there were fundamental design and manufacturing problems. whatever quality advantages they once had have been nullified.

even if LG has the same issues, it will be no worse. and the price is much easier to swallow.

no major complaints.
no huge advantages.

the old Bosche cleaned silverware a bit better.

the LG is a bit noisier, but still very quiet. the bosche was just silent.

on the plus side it’s easier to load since everything is configurable.

all the racks and rollers are super smooth.

shows the social links from my profile page on GitLab.com the domain link looks fine, the mastodon one has an mastodon (elephant) icon but the bluesky link is unrecognizable. it just shows an @ sign and a long UUID type identifier. it looks broken.

also, finding the correct magic format for these fields is not at all discoverable. getting the mastodon one right was very difficult.

yikes! i had never bothered to cap the concurrency on this operation queue. it had never seemed to need it.

simply putting a more reasonable cap on the queue concurrency was enough to keep things from dying.

the protocol handler that directly feeds images to the webkit socket gets a few requests then seems to backs off. and they come in like that until the page is done loading.

on sequoia the handler floods with over 60+ requests. i'm not entirely sure what falls over, but something did.

last night i eventually traced it to a change in how webkit loads images.

or at least, that's my hypothesis.

the "good" machine is still running macOS 12 and whatever webkit was contemporary with that.

but yesterday i noticed on a different machine that the problem simply didn't appear. not ever.

i spent a couple hours eliminating possible differences. i even shut down cores on one machine so it had roughly the same CPU resources.

still nothing obvious. hmmm… 🤔

🧵 - debugging a strange deadlock.

last week i spent about 2 full workdays worth of hours looking into a strange case in a particular user's file.

the project had one page that killed the app instantly. not an especially complex or strange page, but it always triggered a deadlock.

but this is a plug-in and the deadlock is outside my code so there was a limited amount of info available.

what i did find was it didn't seem to be the sort of race condition that i think of as normally causing deadlock. even single stepping through the code triggered it 100% of the time.

My review schedule this summer

time for a late sunday lunch, john coltrane, and my once per week of listening to NPR.

i agree that keeping hope alive is imperative. and to keep fighting and resisting whenever we can.

but our enemies thrive on our unhappiness. they’ve weaponized our impotence. they’re bullies.

so it’s essential that we focus on practical resistance. the time for symbolic gestures has passed.

it has been 0️⃣ days since autocorrect decided that "and" was incorrect and corrected it to "snd" silently and without a red underline.

i've now nuked the autocorrect library twice. i think it's probably easier to let iOS win this one.

"snd" is now preferred spelling if "and".

and if you think the problem is that the left is not united or just doesn’t change then you’re lost in the weeds friend.

the problem is that 50% of the US lives in a reality devoid of facts and is so ignorant of the rest of their country and the world at large that they think everything is awesome.

that’s just not the way protest works IMHO.

i mean, yes, it does get some folks charged up. which is definitely a good thing.

but it’s also very disruptive. that’s a kind of the whole point.

and if the only people you disrupt are your allies already then it tends to be very counterproductive.
