Once upon a time, I was on a hiring committee and we chose Rachel. If you are on a hiring committee, you should also choose Rachel!
Sheβs creative, writes like a dream, is funny and smart as hell.

I check in with local mom groups often. This isnβt on my beat but this has been a huge huge deal here. Lots of discussion, questions and pregnant women looking for new providers.
And Iβm not just sharing this because heβs from Bakersfield!

Strip searches in schools traumatize kids over minor offenses
I could just feel eyes on me. I never forgot that feeling of just standing there almost disgusted with myself. Stephanie A 13-year-old at Memorial Park Middle School who was strip searched after being suspected of having a vape. A school police officer lifted up Stephanie's shirt and bra, exposing her breasts in front of the male principal, Stephanie said.
How could they even do this? I actually thought it was illegal. Kristen Yeckley She claims her daughter was forced to take off all her clothes by a school aide looking for a vape. When her daughter asked if she could put her bra back on, the aide told her to wait. She was left alone, nearly naked, while the aide went outside to talk to the principal, according to court filings.
The cases show a power imbalance when an adult in a position of authority demands a child remove clothing or expose themselves. The cases examined by Bloomberg Law show a pattern of schools not getting parents' permission before strip searching their children. In five, the children were told no when they asked to talk to a parent. Kids are taught to be suspicious of adults who want them to take off their clothes, said Josh Gupta-Kagan, director and founder of the Family Defense Clinic at Columbia Law School. "Even 7-year-olds have a strong sense of their bodily integrity," he said.

Katie Miller @KatieMiller Love a good hot take from@StephenM. "I'll make a deal! We pick someone at random we sent to CECOT, they spend 1 DAY over night in YOUR apartment. Who's taking that deal at 60 Minutes? NOBODY!" This one made me actually LOL
Thereβs a whole network of people who had been visiting folks in ICE detention centers and, yes, some of them house total strangers upon release until they get on their feet. Iβve met them.
Itβs called Freedom for Immigrants, and thereβs an affiliated group in Bakersfield.

It is so bizarre to read about the struggle to make it in the rapidly contracting journalism industry (and mostly the elite tiers!) framed as a unique problem for white men.
"According to theβ¦annual Harris Poll, for the 1st time, a majority of Americans believe billionaires are a threat to democracy. A remarkable 71% believe there should be a wealth tax. A majority believe there should be a cap on how much wealth a person can accumulate." www.nytimes.com/2025/12/14/o...
It is so beyond bizarre to read the struggle to gain a foothold in journalism couched as a unique problem for white men.
