Quit ChatGPT: right now! Your subscription is bankrolling authoritarianism | Rutger Bregman As a historian, I’ve studied the major consumer boycotts of history. We can take down ChatGPT and send a powerful signal to Silicon Valley, says author and historian Rutger Bregman

"The most effective consumer boycotts in history share two qualities: they are narrow and they are easy," writes @rutgerbregman.com

Try shopping random vintage items online β€” okay it only helped for like 20 mins and you have to pre-identify some niche item like β€œPrincess House Martini Pitcher” and then challenge yourself to find it within 30 miles on FB Marketplace, but hey 20 minutes is 20 minutes.

I am struggling with what might be a generational experience. The gulf war was pretty politically formative for me. It’s not history so much as memory this time.

It is destabilizing to see almost the exact same gameplan but this time without the guardrails that at the time I took for granted.

Republicans don’t view any action at all as good or bad. There is only β€œwho is doing it?”

If it’s Trump it is good even if they hated it yesterday. And if it’s a Democrat it’s bad even if they loved it yesterday.

CBS paid the president of the United States millions in bribe money and now they censor news reports so it does not annoy him. I don’t know how much plainer we can put this.

I am in this boat to an extent (no toxic meds yet but trying to avoid getting there) and trying to give up the alcohol. But man is it tough.

That’s because America has embraced the pilgrim aesthetic and indeed equates tastes with morals. 🀣 and all that exceptionalism stuff too is tied to any choices.

Have you ever heard someone go off, and their words are so perfectly chosen, so well said in that moment, that you’re in awe? You think, β€œThere’s nothing to add here,” and you applaud in your head.

That’s exactly this. Pure perfection. πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½
