hundreds of scholars from around world expressed their solidarity with Ilia State University #Georgia. I have often been critical of a residual few who collaborate w perpetrators, but real story is how many colleagues are *entirely* clear in their values. More than open.substack.com/pub/ganatleb...
Georgiaโs disputed parliament adopted a restrictive package that limits foreign funding, criminalizes โexternal lobbying,โ restricts political activity, curbs businesses, and penalizes โsystematicโ refusal to recognize the governmentโs legitimacy.
Publicly questioning the Georgian Dreamโs legitimacy is now 3 years jail.
Russian term of โextremismโ has also appeared in law in Georgia: โextremism against constitutional orderโ is also 3 years jail.
Nothing screams lack of legitimacy to govern as criminalizing the public statements on your lack of legitimacy to govern.
Georgia, 2026.
Georgian Dream adopted another set of repressive legislateive amendments.
The most important one being further widening the scope of the ban on "(foreign) grant" legislation. Essentially any foreign payment for provided services could be seen as foreign influencing.

President of the National Bank of Georgia, Natela (Natia) Turnava, stated that commercial banks must operate within the Condtitutional and legal framework.
This implies that the Georgian Dream expects commercial banks to go against UK sanctions regime and unfreeze Imedi TV and POSTV accounts,

Loved my friend and colleague Anna Chikovaniโs photo from todayโs protest commemorating 105 years since the Soviet Russian occupation of Georgia.
Her expression is so firm, determined, concerned and calm at the same time.
