San Diego is taking a major step toward making its streets safer with a new comprehensive speed management plan that outlines where speed limits could be lowered across the city as part of its Vision Zero goal to eliminate traffic deaths.
Research on the 15th Street cycletrack (albeit a different section) found that "Motor vehicle [Level of Service] was largely unaffected" www.researchgate.net/publication/...
Level of Service is a vehicle traffic flow metric that primarily looks at congestion, so 15th Street didn't cause congestion

Registering as a resident, then buying a permit was nearly instantaneous for me. I even had to resubmit verification (used mail - not accepted, then car registration - accepted). This was 2nd week of January though and I did it from home. Iβd imagine itβs pretty stressful to do at the park.
Thanks for leading the charge on this! I noticed a typo on the webpage, βlicense placesβ instead of βplatesβ
The bill text (so far) has been published here:

Help stop the misguided attempt to license bikes in CA, it will only lead to making it more difficult for people to adopt bikes. We donβt need new laws, we need the existing classifications of e-bikes to be properly enforced.

Theyβll say:
Bicyclist hits a flexpost or curb? Not their fault, shouldnβt have been installed
Motorist hits a flexpost or curb? Not their fault, needed 14β lanes & clear recovery zone - safer for biking inπ΅βπ«
Motorist hits a child? Not the driverβs fault, child shouldnβt have been walking at sunset
The same guys using junk science to say protected bike lanes are dangerous for people biking told the mom who lost her daughter and other supporters that the red light cameras theyβre requesting will not prevent future crashes because of sunsets and because they say so.
Build a low-stress citywide network and more Americans will ride bikes more often.

People scoff when you tell them how many people bike to the hospital because they only imagine themselves doing it sick or injured, but not of the staff who want health benefits from their commute.
#sandiego Downtown Clean & Safe survey is out. I asked them to operate the bollards on 5th Ave so that it can be pedestrianized again:

Absolutely damning study documenting the rate of drivers breaking the law
"extrapolated, the data projects a staggering 200,000 daily violations at just these intersections"
Confirms what everyone has experienced since Covid. All it took was to set up cameras and document it

What You Need to Know About After-School Care
San Diego families face scarce after-school care with long waitlists despite district expansion. Start searching early, check school pre-enrollment windows, and ask about deadlines and wait times. Use YMCA aβ¦
Gaslamp Quarter Association should lead a charge to get the bollards put back / left in place for longer durations to minimize staff costs. Seems deliveries could be accommodated on perpendicular streets or, at worst, just remove / replace bollards for one lane up 5th for βauthorized vehicles onlyβ
During discussions about building the downtown mobility plan bikeways with curb-separation (instead of flexposts) I recall city staff mention it is very difficult to do subgrade work on streets downtown due to basements. Might be a reason retractable bollards werenβt used.
Agreed. There hasnβt been a particularly coordinated or concerted pushback, and itβs leading the door open for misunderstanding and hampered ebike adoption. We are trying to make our voice heard on the topic, but thereβs so much more to be done.

"The annual traffic fatality rate per 100k people increased by more than 33% across the 100 largest US cities but less than 5% in all other parts of the country [between 2008-12 and 2018-22]."

Because Iβm a sicko, I peruse old digitized City of SD planning documents. I stumbled upon the 1938-39 Annual City Budget Report. How do we bring back this graphic design freedom when communicating the city budget??? Feel like it might help clear some things up.
Do you use an e-scooter to get around?
Iβm working on a feature about the people behind the growing number of e-scooters on our streets - why people ride, how itβs changed daily life, and how riders are navigating new rules, safety risks etc

For my San Diego peeps, my org, as part of our OneSD effort, launched a countywide survey this week to assess the state of our community fabric. Open to all in SD County and just takes 10 minutes. Please take the survey, share widely, and feel free to reach out to me with questions. My DMs are open.

And once again, a Flar is not a car
In 2024 Oakland implemented a 4 car lane to 1 car lane road diet on 13th St in Downtown using only paint. Itβs not perfect but this relatively cheap change has helped a lot w speeding.
