Americans will fly to Europe, walk places, enjoy the tranquil patio dining, and soak up the human-scaled charm of the urban streets.

They will then fly back home and absolutely foam at the mouth over any proposal to make our streets safer, more equitable, and calmer by limiting cars for everything.

Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo: β€˜A city’s creativity doesn’t depend on cars. That’s the 20thΒ century’ Accused of desecrating the French capital, the politician wants more bikes, green spaces and social housing

β€œA city’s creativity doesn’t depend on cars. That’s the 20th century. We’re in the 21st.”— Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo.

No matter what happens in the Paris election in 4 days, the world’s cities owe @annehidalgo.bsky.social a huge debt of gratitude.

The boldest, most inspiring mayor I’ve seen.

The illustrated police news July 1, 1899

An illustration of a lady in a big hat and dress clocking a man in the jaw while onlookers rush towards them on a country lane. Her bicycle is on the ground in the foreground.

THRASHED BY A LADY

CYCLIST.

WHO IS NOTED FOR HER ATHLETIC POWERS.

An extraordinary scene was witnessed on
Saturday morning in Peel Lane, a thorough-
fare connecting Little Hulton with Tyldesley,
in which the principal participants were a
young lady cyclist and a youth of nineteen
or twenty. The lady was riding at a good
pace, and when in a quiet part of the road
the young man, who had apparently been
imbibing, stepped into the roadway, and,
addressing some insulting remarks to the
cyclist, made as if he intended pulling her
off the machine. She immediately alighted,
caught hold of the astonished youth, and
gave him a sound thrashing, using her fists
in scientific fashion, to the delight of several
colliers who were passing. The young man
made off, and the cyclist, who is believed to
be a Bolton Lady noted for her athletic
powers, rode off towards Tydesley.

Minnesota lawmaker Katie Jones rode in a cargo e-bike to the hospital for her baby's birth. Her husband, Peter Schmitt, pedaled the two miles there.

On the return journey, their son Hans – all 8 pounds and 1 ounce of him – was bundled up and handled it just fine, Jones said.

Interested in how to get public transport that works, even in traffic-heavy suburban cities?

My book lays out the ins and outs of transit planning, with theory and practice grounded in years of experience on what works.

I lived thru the end of public smoking. Early in my career I presented to city councils who were smoking, in front of audiences who were smoking.

Smoking in restaurants, airplanes, hospitals…

All of that seems insane now, but it was very controversial when we DID change it.

We CAN change things.

With gas prices soaring, some people might search for cheaper transportation options. In many cites, a bicycle is a cheap and easy way to get around gas free. Give it a try.

Lots of people say bicycling beats high gas prices Bike shops say business is good as commuters tune up their old bike, or buy a new one, and leave behind their cars for bicycle commuting.

2008 vibes - our last big gas price spike. PBLs had just emerged in US cities. Biking was a way to reduce dependence and save money.

We’ve since gone through safety, equity, and health waves. Back now to gas prices & oil dependency.

When do we just get to say, β€œBiking is a multisolving good, LFG!”
