I am recruiting graduate students for the experimental side of my lab @mcgill.ca for admission in Fall 2026!
Get in touch if you're interested in how brain circuits implement distributed computation, including dopamine-based distributed RL and probabilistic representations.
Thread coming soon, but be the first to read the latest from @franziau.bsky.social!
Thrilled that our paper is out today in Nature!

Basal ganglia output is a formidable bottleneck
Striatum neurons project to output nuclei in a ratio ~16:1; but their targets outnumber them by up to 150 to 1.
New paper from me, on how I got to those numbers & the model of basal ganglia output they imply

π₯ Our new Science paper shows chronic inflammation activates a cytokine-sensing brain circuit that lowers motivation. Huge team effort: Aelita Zhu, Sarah Starosta, Pignatelli & Janowitz labs! π§΅

We're disappointed to see Ben Barres's powerful book "The Autobiography of a Transgender Scientist" among the ~400 titles removed from the Naval Academy Library. Needless to say, we're proud to have published his book and will keep it β and his memory βΒ alive.
Now out in JNP: journals.physiology.org/doi/full/10....

Best figure I've seen to demonstrate that climate change and migration are tightly linked. You can't ignore one and think you'll be able to prevent the other. It's either delusional or plain cruel.
The brain drain is opening
This is good for trainees, glad if they can find ways to pursue their dreams.
Applications are now open! 3-week courses: Comp Neuro and Deep Learning. 2-week courses: NeuroAI and Comp Tools for Climate Science.
