An ecological framework for microbial metabolites in the ocean ecosystem
The ocean microbe-metabolite network involves thousands of individual metabolites that encompass a breadth of chemical diversity and biological functions. These microbial metabolites mediate biogeoch....

For this assignment each student was tasked with choosing a microbe that has a unique metabolic capability that humans can benefit from & making a flier to educate non-scientists about how useful the microbe is. Was a great way to reinforce info about a tough topic (metabolic diversity).

My first UG mentee @WLU accepted an offer to pursue her PhD @ UI Urbana-Champaign working on primate #microbiomes. She came into my microbiome class my 1st year as faculty planning on vet school & was inspired to do #research in my lab & hasn't looked back. Why I love what I do! So freaking proud.

Used the #thankamicrobe idea of @mostlymicrobes.bsky.social to teach my upperclass #microbiology students how we benefit from microbial metabolisms & it was awesome! Posted them in our dept and have thoroughly enjoyed catching visitors, staff & other students reading them! Check out a few examples:

Sponge exhalent metabolites influence coral reef picoplankton dynamics
Scientific Reports - Sponge exhalent metabolites influence coral reef picoplankton dynamics
Check out my newly published work in Scientific Reports where @amyapprill.bsky.social, Cara Fiore, Cole Easson and myself present data showing that compounds in sponge exhalent water influence the composition, growth, and nutrient cycling of coral reef picoplankton.

Teaching #microbiology lecture/lab for the first time next semester. Excited to model it after a more modern version of the field! Does anyone have any materials they'd be willing to share or any advice on a structure (for lecture or lab) that has worked well for you to cover the basics + modernize?

Anyone used DESS for room temp preservation of soil, water, or animal-associated microbial DNA? Does it work well? What "recipe" did you use? @drchriskellogg.bsky.social @reefgenomics.bsky.social @aquaticmicrolab.bsky.social @vibriosoup.bsky.social ??

Check out our latest pub in Communications Biology. Really cool study that elucidates a nutrient recycling pathway in which the coral holobiont incorporates nutrients from sponge-derived matter. Potentially major implications for coral reef restoration and coral aquaculture endeavors. rdcu.be/dxCUr
