McManus also used genetics to study the gene flow of the Great spangled fritillary species. #science
McManus discusses the extinction vortex, and how it connects to the Great spangled fritillary species.
“Most butterflies are not thriving in human dominating landscapes,” McManus said. She now begins part two of her presentation and findings.
“When a population becomes isolated, we expect them to lose genetic diversity,” McManus said. However, McManus and her team discovered that urban butterflies do actually retain genetic diversity.
McManus performed a sample collection, took morphological measurements, and conducted DNA sequencing to test the survival of the sampled butterflies, and if urban butterflies hold different characteristics than others. She concluded urban areas do have an impact on a butterflies life. #science
McManus suggests we can learn a lot about a butterflies persistence from the cabbage white butterfly species.
