This is a great article and got too little attention when it first came out. @propublica.org is doing amazing work.

Just saw a sprightly, adorable Carolina wren on our back deck, checking out the spot under the eaves where this species (presumably this very same bird and his mate) reared at least two broods last year.

This is the first sighting of the year.

Spring is coming!

For years on my old blog I published the names of servicemembers who died in Iraq & Afghanistan. No other outlets were.

These are the first 4 Americans to die in the Iran War.
Capt. Cody A. Khork, 35
Sgt. 1st Class Noah L. Tietjens, 42
Sgt. 1st Class Nicole M. Amor, 39
Sgt. Declan J. Coady, 20

Still proud of this story I did a decade ago for Newsweek that interviewed ornithologists about that time Randy Johnson vaporized a bird.

"I remember it well," one researcher said. "I was appalled, as I study mourning doves."

The cruelty and inhumanity of this Administration’s policies have left another person dead—as CBP dropped off Nurul Amin Shah Alam, a nearly blind refugee living in Buffalo NY, alone on a cold winter night miles from his home.

This cruelty must end.

The State of the Union really highlighted to me three themes of the Trump presidency (especially the second one). First, it's notable that in a speech to joint session of Congress, how little Congress was asked to do.

Please read this article to the end. Even before ICE got involved, this started because this *blind man who speaks no English and uses a curtain rod as a walking stick* got lost on a walk and some Karen called the police on him and they tasered and beat him bc he didn’t drop the rod. WTF

Photo of a page from A FAREWELL TO ARMS: “We were all cooked. The thing was not to recognize it. The last country to realize they were cooked would win the wat. We had another drink. Was I on somebody's staff? No. He was. It was all balls. We were alone in the club sitting back in one of the big leather sofas. His boots were smoothly polished dull leather. They were beautiful boots. He said it was all balls. They thought only in divisions and man-power. They all squabbled about divisions and only killed them when they got them. They were all cooked.
The Germans won the victories. By God they were soldiers. The old Hun was a soldier. But they were cooked too. We were all cooked. I asked about Russia. He said they were cooked already.
I'd soon see they were cooked. Then the Austrians were cooked too. If they got some Hun divisions they could do it. Did he think they would attack this fall? Of course they would. The Italians were cooked. Everybody knew they were cooked. The old Hun would come down through the Trentino and cut the railway at Vicenza and then where would the Italians be? They tried that in
'sixteen, I said. Not with Germans. Yes, I said. But they probably wouldn't do that, he said. It was too simple. They'd try something complicated and get royally cooked. I had to go, I said. I had to get back to the hospital. "Good-by," he said. Then cheerily, "Every sort of luck!"

When you put it like this, a $75 million bribe to Melania and gutting the Washington Post seems like a small price to pay.

Buried in the budget: Mike Huckabee, Donald Trump and Newsmax As Florida lawmakers begin work on a new state budget, a quick look at three especially ugly earmarks that have already made it into initial drafts of the state spending plan.

Looks like Florida lawmakers are going to request $5.5 million in taxpayer money TO RENAME AN AIRPORT after DJT.

Someone has sure already made this observation but the fact they can convert all those empty warehouses into prison camps means they could have converted them into housing, community centers, job training centers or, hell, libraries or schools all along. It’s always a matter of will not resources.

Just as ICE and CBP have no legitimate role in "election security" neither does the head of DHS. The mere existence of this press conference should be a scandal, much less this tone-deaf comment.

This is why domestic "shuffle" flights between ICE detention centers have skyrocketed, much moreso than ICE deportation flights.

When you are moved to a different jurisdiction, you have to refile your habeas petition all over again. They want to wear people down so they'll give up on their cases.

U.K. might lose a prime minister because a guy who worked for him knew another guy who hung out with Epstein. Meanwhile the U.S. opposition party is telling our President, who was Epstein's best friend, that his secret police should get better training so their public street murders look less messy.
