Watercolor painting of a Honeycomb Cowfish, Acanthostracion polygonius. The intricate pattern of this Boxfish breaks up its silhouette and helps it blend into its surroundings.

I’m painting one reef fish per day for 100 days with the hope of building a community.
It’s about how art becomes connection. If you love the ocean, curiosity is enough. 🐠

β€˜Nothing is sacred to them’: the race to save rare plants as Russian troops advance With some of Ukraine’s most valuable biodiversity sites and science facilities under occupation, experts at Sofiyivka Park in Uman are struggling to preserve the country’s natural history

The Ruzzian invasion of Ukraine isn’t only a human tragedy, it carries far-reaching environmental costs too. Some are obvious, others more subtle (via @theguardian.com), but no less serious.

❄️ Six days under water. In total darkness and in bitter cold. So that Kyiv residents could have warmth in their homes.

As a result of a Russian missile strike, one of the capital’s combined heat and power plants (CHP) was flooded. A damaged pipe made repairs impossible, putting heat and electricity supplies for thousands of families at risk.

Without hesitation, divers from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (DSNS) entered the icy water, with air temperatures dropping to –15 Β°C. Darkness, cold, extreme conditions β€” and no option to β€œdo it later.” For six days they worked where it was hard even to breathe, so that warmth could return to Kyiv homes.

This is a feat of humanism and self-sacrifice by rescuers that might have gone unnoticed. Yet it is precisely such rescue operations β€” and the people who take part in them β€” that keep Ukrainian cities from energy catastrophes.

Sincere gratitude to the personnel of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine for their courage, endurance, and professionalism!

❄️ Six days under water, in darkness and freezing cold.
After a Russian missile strike flooded one of Kyiv heat and power plants, DSNS divers worked in icy water (air temperature to –15 Β°C) to restore heat and power for thousands of families.
An act of courage that kept the city warm.

The Black Hole - 22/9/2018 - Tahkoluoto Finland There's two old empty oil storage tanks beside Tahkoluoto harbor. The tanks are closed, but have one open maintenance hatch through I put the microphones inside. I waited for a stormy day to do that,

if you have some over-ear headphones, treat yourself to this audio wonder. recorded inside a large metal tank during a storm (not by me). recorded with a high-end pair of stereo mics. soundcloud.com/holotna/iron...

For this year's #25DaysOfFishmas we're going to go in roughly chronological order, from the oldest lineages of fish to the present. We're kicking off, then, with a truly ancient and utterly bizarre animal - this is the Queensland Lungfish, Neoceratodus forsteri.
