A lot of games that don't really work are trying to account for too many different types of play—it's actually really hard to make something work for both a one-shot and a long-running campaign, and trying to stretch a system to do both sometimes means it does the one you really want badly.

I think more the latter than the former, in this instance. That would have been early 2014 that I stopped using multiple number presses to text.

This is mostly unimaginable to me because I didn't even get a smartphone until winter break my first year of law school.

(I do feel compelled to point out that "drafted on a phone" means "saved in a findable electronic location" and "drafted on paper towels" means basically the opposite of that.)

(It's probably scattered between multiple notebooks and other papers, some of which I may not have anymore. I was not the most organized notetaker; the first draft of what wound up being nearly two pages of my senior thesis in undergrad was handwritten on paper towels.)

(I still think without that background I would have written INSUFFERABLE blog posts about it when I was 16–20? There's a notebook somewhere with my handwritten notes for an essay on the dialectical significance of having a penis and also sucking penises; young people cannot be trusted with ideas.)

I think what saved me from feeling like I needed to write pseudophilosophical articles about having multiple partners is the fact that my great uncle, my great aunt, and my great aunt's lover were just all part of regular life in my extended family growing up. Just "yup, that's one of the options."

This is even funnier when—as I saw when I was clerking—it happens with the internal cross-references in the execution version of a contract, leading to a binding agreement that's basically impossible to interpret without (potentially competing) testimony on what the parties meant to put there.

Some of them are much better than others, but among the ones I've mentioned here you should definitely check out Star Driver (weird mech show from the lead writer of Utena with related but very different storytelling rhythms) and Gankutsuou (sci-fi Count of Monte Cristo with really cool art style).

This wasn't asked of me but I'm gonna say a fourth LoC building dedicated to cinema/multimedia arts, with floors of private a/v booths for research and multiple curated repertory movie theater screens and performance spaces/stages for public education, would be the best legacy I could hope for.

My parents had a cat a while back that would get into that position and meow until you turned the water on over her. She would also sometimes jump into the shower with you if you weren't careful and stand outside the spray but in the splash zone, just never got the memo she was supposed to hate it.
