It’s out! 🐟 We compared three regeneration superstarsβ€”axolotl, zebrafish, and Polypterusβ€”to ask how animals regrow limbs and fins. We find shared core processes, and other programs fine-tuned by evolution in surprising, lineage-specific ways. tinyurl.com/mpftkn7y

This is a very thoughtful way of working as a group to determine boundaries on AI use within a lab and I completely agree with their conclusions based on my own experience testing LLM tools!

My lab’s study of behavioral development 🐠 has long faced a roadblock: how do you follow an individual’s development if you can’t identify who’s who? How do you identify a juvenile fish the size of a grain of rice? Here, we share two safe, effective tagging methods! doi.org/10.1002/jez.... πŸ§ͺ (1/5)

Pleased to say that Jonas Hartmann (bs-less) and I have finally released DySTrack (β€œdiss track”) - Dynamic Sample Tracking.

It’s a Python-based, modular tool that brings smart microscopy to everyday imaging on commercial systems.

Hmmm on a test image I generated using Gemini, it even did a pretty good job of simulating gaussian noise.

absolutely - I save movies with the author name in the file name and throw them in the same folder as the lecture I want to use them in :) helps my poor addled brain haha

A bar graph showing the number of NIH New Innovator awards since their creation in 2007.

A bar graph showing the number of NIH New Innovator awards since their creation in 2007.

So how did it go?

NIH made 43 DP2 awards, the lowest number in a decade.

I really wish Director Bhattacharya would spend doing his actual job rather than badmouthing the agency he is charged to lead and spouting platitudes on podcasts and elsewhere.

Zara was a star, a cherished friend, and an untiring advocate. I wish she had the chance to stay here with us and help create a brighter future, but she already gave us so much in her time here. I'm glad she will be honored in the next cohort of LE fellows ❀️

I need to get some better frames now that I'm a big kid (supposedly) but finally got my collection of Bob Goldstein prints in my office! There's a Clare Waterman one out of view too!

Stop treating code like an afterthought: record, share and value it Scientists, research institutions, funders, libraries and publishers must all improve software practices.

It is time to recognize research software as a valuable scientific contribution in itself, beyond a tool β€” and to support it

In my perfect universe there would be a way to indicate "read & understood" without sending an email, but I am finding i may be unique for academia in my preference for not sending gratuitous short emails like "great, thanks!*

We also demonstrated some preliminary evidence that immune cells in the brain of older fish are more motile and amoeboid than those of younger fish, similar to changes we see in aging mammals. We are excited to further explore these findings in the Haynes lab!

Here's a movie from the 3D neuroimaging paper - this is the telencephalon of a 19 month old tg(kdrl:mCherry, mpeg1:eGFP) fish. We use imaris to strip the top layer (the skin and skull) off the projection so we can see just the tissue beneath the skull. This was taken with a Bruker 2P+ multiphoton.

Want to image the adult zebrafish brain? Here's a nifty design that I made with the help of a talented master's student, Corey Steinhauser.

In situ Proteomics Unveils Specialized Domains for Extrasynaptic Signaling on Neuronal Cilia Neuronal cilia have emerged as crucial signaling hubs, yet their molecular composition and integration with synaptic communication remain poorly understood. Using a newly developed Arl13b-TurboID mous...

Whoa - neuronal ciliary proteome! Tons to dig into here - different from kidney cilia proteome (perhaps unsurprising) and enriched for many postsynaptic proteins, strengthening previous suggestions of cilia as postsynaptic signaling structures.

It looks like as a signatory to the UN Florence Agreement, if you 1) buy an item as a nonprofit or educational institution, 2) from a signatory country, 3) can demonstrate it is for research purposes, and/or 4) the item is not made in the US in significant quantities, you can import duty-free!

The NIH’s 2024 budget of just under $37B generated $95B in economic activity in 2024 alone. 99.4% of new pharmaceuticals approved from 2010-2019 came from NIH-funded research. I’m hard pressed to think of anything that generates as much direct economic benefit as our NIH did before they destroyed it
